Re: Bands that influenced a ton of popular bands but reaped no rewards

Whatever the reason, the fact is they were massively influential and their legacy was only recognised decades after they broke up. John Cage, Nico and obviously Lou Reed had great careers after but the Velvet Underground never made it. (I'm purposely discarding the Doug Yule-led later iteration of ...

Re: Are 'Aged' signature guitars worth the investment?

No. Even outside of the money, I’ve never understood why people want someone else’s scratches and dents. Those are the player’s and they earned them. Just buying a relic guitar without earning those scratches has always been a little weird to me. It’s like a costume in guitar form. Meh. After they ...

Re: Learning to play guitar- do’s and don’ts

If a guitar is good, then it's good, no matter what is on the headstock. Then why do you take the Squier logo off the headstocks? Because otherwise idiots won't come and go:"Hey man, sweet old strat" so I can make fun of them. Duh. And how did you only spend a hundred or two on a Gibson? ...

Re: Learning to play guitar- do’s and don’ts

I thought the Squires were looked at like cheap shit among guitar players, no? Squiers are inexpensive, but across the range, there are some real gems. My main "classic" strat is a Squier as well...and people always want know about my "great old strat" after gigs. ...and I'm lik...

Re: Learning to play guitar- do’s and don’ts

Any recommendations on sub-$500 guitars that would be appropriate for a beginner to intermediate? Something good for crunchy rock, melodic hard rock, metal. THEY MAKE GUITARS THAT COST OVER $500???   My standard rule is that spending more than $500 for a guitar or amp is gay. ...

Fun little humble brag about RATM - among other times, I saw... their last show together to date (LA Rising 2011). Would love to be at their next first reunion show too! Wow! I was at that show! Fucking abysmal shit. I left about halfway through. They should probably rename the band:"Rage agai...

Re: Learning to play guitar- do’s and don’ts

I have a BOSS GT-6 and wondered if any of you know a way that I can downtune through the board rather than downtune my guitar? Is there anyone that has used this pedal? It's old but built like a tank. Also - are there games or applications for android that a new guitar player would find useful? I h...

Has there been any confirmation that Phil and Tracii didn't just take Riley out to the desert, and he is now in a shallow hole somewhere off the 15 between L.A. and Vegas?

Re: If you could only listen to Zeppelin or Sabbath from here on out..

This is a weird one for me...I actually LIKE Sabbath better, but would go with Zeppelin for the more diverse catalog.

...especially if you add in bootlegs. Sabbath live is just sort of them playing the albums, so it doesn't add a lot of richness, but Zep live could have any goddamn thing happen.

Right. They didn't get replaced for any other reason than they both left. They weren't kicked. Of course they were replaced, but it wasn't because of any weakness in their playing. nope. they were replaced by steve hunter and dick wagner on train kept a rollin'. Oh, shit. You’re right. Montrose.........their debut album was a total game changer. Nobody was doing anything like that in 1973. It was the invention of modern metal actually. Clean, concise, memorable songs without the psychedelic hippie/blues approach. Hmmm...wasn't that the year Sweet put out "Block Buster!"...

I think I got into them back in 96 with the Great Escape. Thanks to that and Parklife, they were very briefly my favourite band. The hype for the 1997 S/T was crazy at the time. Song 2 helped propel that. I forced myself to like the S/T, but apart from the first two tracks, I found it all a bit meh...

Nazareth Which bands were influenced by Nazareth? That's like saying Dokken and Icon influenced Def Leppard's Hysteria and Adrenalize era. They got their albums out first but that was just the direction hard rock was going in 85-86. Nazareth influenced GNR. Hollywood Rose used to do Hair of the Dog...

Re: Learning to play guitar- do’s and don’ts

Honestly, it mostly depends on the guitar. My semi-hollows with Bigsbys (my main guits) usually feel best with stock 10s, my heavy metal and Floyd guitars are usually hybrid slinky sets with a 9 on top and .46 bottom, so the power chords don't flop around so much. I have a strat that has 11-48 Power...

Re: Learning to play guitar- do’s and don’ts

Buy wayyyyy thicker strings, like 11's or 12's. I played with a guy who kept trying thicker gauges like it was a badge of honor. It got to where he was missing bends and could barely use any vibrato, but he was sure badass for using thick string! I use 10-46's. He played my guitar and said somethin...
