"All is Lost" - 9/10

This will go down as two of Robert Redford's finest hours, and he's had plenty of great ones. See it.

"Captain Phillips" - 8/10

Terrific movie. Very tense and engaging all the way through. Great acting and writing, and Greengrass' direction is meticulous. Hanks is fantastic in this.

"Gravity" - 9/10

Pretty spectacular effects and camerawork in this one. The acting, which isn't constituted by typical dramatic performances, is really strong, too. Make sure to see it in 3D.

"Rush" - 8/10

Terrific movie. A high-water mark for Ron Howard. Excellently directed, written, acted and shot. Also, Hans Zimmer's score for this is way better than the one he did for "Man of Steel."

"Prisoners" - 8/10 Very suspenseful and intense. You never quite know where the movie is going to go. The whole cast is really good, but Jake Gyllenhaal in particular put in an excellent performance. After more recent movies like "Source Code" and "End of Watch," I thin...

Re: Rate the last movie you saw

"Only God Forgives" - 2/10 Really bad, with laughable dialogue. There are some cool, deliberately-framed shots, but Refn's only interest was in designing a movie around those cool-looking shots, and that just didn't work out too well. Kristin Scott Thomas' character says some if the most b...

"The Heat" - 8/10 Really, really funny. Melissa McCarthy is fucking hilarious in this. She's one of the best comic performers working today. Every line she delivers in the movie elicited maximum laughs. Bullock was good, too, but she didn't really get to cut loose with the physical comedy ...

"This is the End" - 8/10 Friggin' hilarious. That is all. No need to stay after the credits though, as there's no tag. "What Maisie Knew" - 8/10 Terrific drama about a divorced couple and its child caught in the middle. One of the most fucked up movies about divorce since "K...

"42" - 9/10 An excellent movie with excellent performances. Boseman and Ford have an incredible rapport in this. Alan Tudyk is also chilling as the cruel, race-baiting Phillies manager, Lucas Black does a great job playing Robinson's eventual best friend, Pee Wee Reese, and the actors play...

"Evil Dead" (remake) - 6/10 Solid flick, gets really amped up and nasty in the last 20 minutes or so. None of the cast matches the charisma of Bruce Campbell, but then again it's more of a somber, troubled vibe as opposed to the weekend of fun angle that led the characters to the cabin in ...

"The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" - 7/10

"Burt Wonderstone" is surprisingly funny. The performances all around are good, and the gags are good. It has the right amount of laughs and heart. I'm surprised it's gotten as trounced as it has by the critics and IMDb voters.

Oz the Great and Powerful - 6/10. The special effects from the original were better, and that's some 70 years old. Add to that, it's not fucking Snow White. If you've seen it, you know that part didn't belong. . 6/10 for me, too. Decent, but not great. Williams was great, as was Braff, Weisz was so...

Re: Rate the last movie you saw

"Stoker" - 5/10 I wanted to like this, as it's beautifully shot and the production design is fantastic, but it simply amounts to a mood piece, with a lot of the visuals padding a story that's barely there. Also, a few key aspects of that story are left unclear by movie's end, which is neve...

A Good Day To Die Hard: 7/10 I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the Die Hard movies. The first one was a fucking brilliant 10 out of 10. I left the theater exhausted And although this one wasn't as good as Live Free Or Die Hard, it was still entertaining enough to get a passing grade from...

"Zero Dark Thirty" - 9/10 Really great. Intense, scary, very well-made and with terrific performances.

"Warm Bodies" - 8/10 Such a cool premise for a movie involving zombies. Really, really good movie, with a terrific lead performance by Nicholas Hoult as a conflicted zombie.

Re: Rate the last movie you saw

Well, I saw two movies this week that are fantastic. First up was "Silver Linings Playbook," which I think is one of my top picks of the year. On the one hand, it's this very dramatic, tough look at one man's mental breakdown and the toll it takes on the parents he's returned to live with,...

Re: The impact of Romney's concession speech

Funny enough, even a lot of articles and editorials are now suggesting that the Republican party either totally rebuild itself, embracing a more centrist concept of moderation, or even disband. I don't think it would be a big stretch to assume that the party is going to be struggling to find itself ...

Re: The impact of Romney's concession speech

The opposite I think may happen. Conservatives will blame nominating two moderates in a row with McCain and Romney. That's entirely possible. "The problem is, we didn't get conservative enough!" And of course in 2014 we'll see a shift again, like we did in 2010, with the republicans picki...

Re: The impact of Romney's concession speech

I'm not in love with Obama, but I gotta say, the more I looked at Romney the worse I thought this country would be if he won. If the Republicans hunker down and refuse to budge they're going to make this country much worse. I don't think they realize that their white bread, bible thumpin' supporter...

The impact of Romney's concession speech

It's always funny how these sorts of concession speeches offer all the humility and goodwill that isn't present in a campaign. For obvious reasons, though, strength in defeat is acceptable, as opposed to the potential of exhibited weakness while running for office. I think Romney's speech was solid....

My TV setup is unhooked and my election night gathering plans didn't happen, so I'm following the results on Politico.

Looking at the map so far, it's clearly going to be a long night.

how do you know if someone has defriended you on FB? Try UnfriendFinder. It's an add-on that actually works. It notifies you at the top of your profile page when someone flies the coop. As for losing friends due to politics, that's just silly. As long as people can be civil, I can separate the poli...

Re: The RNC

Hmmm, watching Clint pretend to talk to the president and even trotting out Dirty Harry-isms... I'm no political basher, nor am I a conspiracy theorist, but he's said in the past that he's probably closer in ideology to a Libertarian. He was the setup to Romney, so if there was even the remote possi...
