Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
My wife got me a couple guitars for my birthday last weekend. One is a ESP/LTD M-200FM and a NRJ 7 string guitar. The LTD is a neck thru with a Floyd Rose Special bridge and black chrome hardware. The other, the NRJ, is a brand name I've never heard before but it feels great to play and it sounds great. The sparkles look a bit wimpy, but I'm ok with it. She likes the sparkly one, by the way.
Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I got a Gibson melody maker with 2 P90's that I am making into a gold top. Paint just came in the mail from ReRanch today.
I needed a Les Paul shaped object with P90s for the Tom Petty cover band I am in,
$420 on sale at SamAsh. 12 months same as cash on their card.

Also just picked up another Squier Stagemaster, which I promptly covered in holographic gold glitter.

I bought a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III in tweed, today. Pretty stoked. Next paycheck, I'll buy the cab, before the tweed becomes hard to find.

So... Was checking out some hollow & semi-hollow body guitars over the weekend. I liked the Gibson ES-335, but I liked the Gretsch G6120 a bit better. Anyone have opinions on some they like or would suggest?

Depending on budget, but I like the ES-339s and Midtowns... you just gotta play a bunch to get a winner.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
My favorite semi-hollows are Epiphone Rivieras. I have two, a sunburst from the 2000s and a natural maple one from the sixties.
The combination of a semi-hollow body and mini humbuckers just really works for me. The minis give you the midrange bite that semi's sometimes lose. It's a great balance.
Of all my guitars, I get the most compliments on the sound of my sunburst Riviera...and I have a *lot* of guitars.
I'd also suggest some of the recent anniversary reissue Epiphone full-hollow bodies, like the Casino and Sorrento.
The Casino is a must-try for anyone looking at full hollows.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I would take the 6120 over the 335 any day. But there are a couple of things to consider - 335s usually have a center block, so if you're looking to run these through distortion, you'd be less prone to feedback with the Gibson. The 6120 does not have a center block, and can feedback pretty badly through distortion. That said, I run mine through some AC/DC type distortion without a problem at all. Another thing to consider is whether you want a Bigsby or not. 6120's have them stock, ES-335's don't always. Without locking tuners, changing strings on a Bigsby equipped guitar can be a bitch. Also, a 6120 has a floating bridge. As soon as you remove the strings, the bridge and its base will fall right off the guitar, so you have to re-intonate the guitar unless you wisely mark where the bridge goes. I glue my floating bridges down immediately after I ensure the intonation is right.Demons Eye wrote:So... Was checking out some hollow & semi-hollow body guitars over the weekend. You can make a Gretsch sound like a Gibson any day, but you cannot make a Gibson sound like a Gretsch. The 6120 was developed by Gretsch with Chet Atkins, so it's a superb country guitar, and the ebony fretboard feels phenomenal.

Here are my Rivs:
Here is the Melody maker I goldtopped, with a manufacturer's pic of what it looked like before:
Sorry about the poor pic quality, it's just on my phone in questionable light...it looks really nice in person. It's the gold top paint from guitar ReRanch that is formulated with real bronze flakes just like the original '50's gold top paint , then it has several layers of Tru Oil for a nice not-too-glossy clear over the top.
I love Tru Oil for guitars. I use it for sealing wood on tops and necks...and anywhere I want a clear coat that looks naturally vintage.
There is no binding on these guitars, but there is a really light colored maple cap, so I just made a cutting jig-thingy and stripped it to the maple around the edge.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I have no idea how Gibson figures that's a Melody Maker. Carve top, 100% shaped like a LP, normal headstock shape (instead of narrow), it even says "Les Paul" on the headstock. WTF?
Don't get me wrong, it could be a good guitar but it's like they got Revtard to assign a name to the fucking thing. Why don't they just call it a Stratocaster?
