Really stupid "noms de Rock" legitimized by success

Postby HueyRamone » Tue Jan 10, 2017 2:10 pm

A few people in Rock have unbelievably stupid names. Names that should get made fun of, but dont. I have to assume this is due to their success. If they were in mediocre bands, people would be goofing on their stupid names.

Ridiculous names that people accept as fine:

Sting
Slash
The Edge

Guys who didnt become megastars, so their names are still seen as goofy:

Atomik Tommy M
Amir Derach
Thunderstick
Bruce Kulick

Any others?

Even though he isn't successful, Jizzy Pearl has the worst stage name in all of rock. Just horrible.

No. He might be an asshole, but there's nothing wrong with that name.

On a completely unrelated note, I'll say that Eddie Vedder is a stupid name. He should have gone all the way and called himself Cheddar Vedder as his homage to fromage.

Disagree. It was cheesy in 81 and still is now. I remember seeing the old Kerrangs where Dante Bonutto (and others) would smirk at the name (and Mick Mars - "Mikki Marzz")

My vote also goes to The Edge. The Edge of what? It certainly isn't for his mastery of the guitar. The Edge in effect peddles, maybe.
I also nominate:
Rikki Rocket and Izzy Stradlin. Both are Terrible.

Synister Gates, M Shadows and Zakky Vengeance get my vote for some of the most cringe-worthy stage names of all time. Awful. Really fucking awful.

"Zakk Wylde" only works if you're a bonafide rock god. "Blacky Lawless" is kinda funny, but shouldn't get a pass anyways.

I like the sound of "Synister Gates", but I do like a spooky metal name.

However, there's nothing "synister" about a chubby guy in a porkpie hat, shades, and an affliction t-shirt. If he looked like he was in Deströyer666, it would be cool. Like KK Warslut.

Zacky Vengeance? Heh heh...

Yes. The reference is a bit clever but the name still sucks.

And if his level is considered success, what about the following glam rocker gods from Sweden:

Zinny J. Zan, Stixx Galore (Shotgun Messiah)
Johnny D. Fox, Magnus Axx (Swedish Erotica)

Timi Grabber
Mikkey Dee

And some of the Kiss names... the original 4 are not too bad, and except for Gene Simmons based on their real names.
Then we got... Eric Carr, Vinnie Vincent and worst of all Mark St. John...

It would have been awesome if they told everyone it was pronounced "Mark Sinjin"

Sinjin is actually an attempt to represent phonetically the now rare name "St. John." As a given-name, "St. John" is sometimes pronounced as [SIN-jin] or [SIN-jun] in the UK. I presume this to be a relic of Norman-French origin (see also Sinclair for St. Claire).

Its spelling is not set in stone, I believe the forms Sinjin, Sinjun and Sinjon have been found.

The name has no 'meaning' in and of itself, but its usage is typically in honor of St. John the Baptist or St. John the Evangelist.

Now I mention just for hilarity's sake, if you've ever seen "A View To A Kill," one of James Bond's aliases is 'St. John Smith.' When someone calls him [SAYNT-jon SMITH] he corrects with the riotously English pronunciation [Sin-jin SMYTHE].

If someone has a long, cumbersome name, I understand using a stage name, like Gus G. Can you imagine having to produce a show poster or guitar clinic ad using the name Konstantinos Karamitroudis?

That said, some are just stupid, like the ones other posters mentioned. Joey Tempest is another one I'd add to the list, although it was appropriate for 80's hard rock.
