Singers you had to get used to
I absolutely hated Hendrix' voice wheb I first heard it. Turned me off of his music for a while. But I kept going back because everyone told me how awesome he was and eventually I started tolerating his singing.

Re: Singers you had to get used to
Dave Mustaine, Alice Cooper, Josh Todd and Tom Kiefer are the ones that pop instantly to mind. I'm sure there are a lot more.

Jello Biafra and Henry Rollins . Very different but equally odd in their styles. I’ll throw Frank Zappa in there also.

Robert Smith (The Cure)
Brian Johnson (AC/DC)
Joe LeSte (Bang Tango - still don't like him, but the band made it work)
Axl Rose (GNR - same thing - heard all the hype and was ready, didn't like, and then got it eventually)

Re: Singers you had to get used to
Attila from Mayhem. The first time I heard De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas I was like "Is this a ghost?"
Speaking of ghosts, King Diamond.
In fact, most of the "operatic" metal singers took some getting used to for me, specifically Geoff Tate and Bruce Dickinson. I didn't connect at all with Maiden or QR as a kid and a lot of it was the vocals.
David Vincent from Morbid Angel for sure. I think "God of Emptiness" was the first death metal song I ever heard and it was a lot to take in.
"LARRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSS."
The folkies: Bob Dylan, Neil Young. Still not used to Joni Mitchell.
Oh, and Michael Stipe! I thought he sounded like a country singer.

It took some time getting used to Sammy Hagar in Van Halen, but I did and it was a shame how Eddie really dropped the ball in 1996.

Never got used to his voice though, still don't like Van Hagar or his solo work...

Re: Singers you had to get used to
I know I'm in the minority here but the first time I heard the Nitro record O.F.R. I thought Jim Gillette had a very unconventional singing style.
"You want Don Juan DeMarco, the world's greatest lover, to talk to you? What do you know of great love?"
Re: Singers you had to get used to
and they sold tickets for the tour before announcing the switch & openers "Go West", for whatever reason, didn't end up doing the tour, also criminal.TravisBicklesMohawk wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 6:37 am Michael DeBarres took over when Robert Palmer left Power Station. Criminal . . .

Scott Walker, Anthony Newley and Leonard Cohen are all great, but maaaan, there is a high bar to get past to get to the pure enjoyment. Those guys all just do THEIR thing to such an extent that on first hearing them, it's like: "Wait. Is this guys serious?" ...then eventually, it becomes an addiction.
Wait. Which board is this?

Lemmy, Tom Keifer, Geoff Tate, Axl Rose, Tom Waits.
Strangely enough, I liked Brian Johnson's voice from the first note.

Re: Singers you had to get used to
I'm not a KD fan to this day because of his voice. I don't get it and never did. I took to both Priest and Maiden from the first listen. Di'Anno's voice took me a second as I heard NOTB first. But I've grown to appreciate and become a fan of Paul's too. Geoff's voice took some time but I've circled back around to where I don't care much for him, his voice or his band anymore. The 80s scene wouldn't have missed them.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 10:32 pm Attila from Mayhem. The first time I heard De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas I was like "Is this a ghost?"

I like Joni's and Bob's. Neil's I'm still not a huge fan. He has some good songs but his voice is different. Tom Petty's voice never bothered. Given how hard he tried to be Dylan and The Byrds, it's strange how much I did like his music.

Re: Singers you had to get used to
Danzig - That bad Elvis impersonator sounding voice came right at the height of the poppy operatic singers in metal, where it was more of the Singing Olympics than a focus on music, songs, and feel. He was like a buzzsaw that cut right through that garbage. Took me years to appreciate and get used to him.
Re: Singers you had to get used to
Warrel Dane. And he is seriously polarizing in metal circles.
Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom. I never fully got used to him, merely tolerated him
Asami of Lovebites. Squeals do not belong in metal.
