How popular were Black Oak Arkansas?

Question for anyone old enough to remember. Buddy of mine insists they were extremely popular. I had thought they were only marginally successful for a few years then died out. Just curious if anyone remembers if they were "extremely popular".

They were pretty popular, playing in auditoriums and arenas. They did a lot of TV stuff, such as Midnight Special, In Concert, etc.
I think they were known more for their visual delivery and style, rather than the songs themselves.
Their manager, Butch Stone, became very well known in the music business industry.

It could depend on where you're from. I had 'Raunch and Roll' as a teen and played it quite a bit, but I never heard them on the radio, and never heard anyone talking about them. This is up in North Seattle.

Yeah I could definitely see their appeal being more selective for the Midwest and South and not so much on the coasts. They only had 1 top 50 album and 1 top 40 single, after all. Seems like they caught that mid-70s wave when rock tours exploded and rode it.

Yeah, Roth seems to have been very much influenced by Jim Dandy. I wasn't a fan of Black Oak Arkansas and never saw Jim Dandy. However, I saw Roth during the first and second VH tours.
When I watch video clips today of Jim Dandy in his prime, I see where Roth got a lot of his stage style.

People were hesitant on Roth in 76/77 because he was dismissed as a Jim Dandy clone.

45 years later the only thing Jim Dandy is remembered for is being an inspiration for DLR.

In the Greater Boston area, not at all. One drummer kid had a BOA record because Tommy Aldridge was in the band & we knew him from Ozzy. I haven't listen to them since then.

Jim looks to be about 5'6", hes as short as the hotties he is gettin' with.

The whole song and video are just weird and awkward. I may have to revisit this. I would say he's better than Thor!

Y’all, yallllllllllllll, y’all........ lawd y’all. I can’t even with this shiz. Lol it’s CRINGE AT LEVEL 10 on a scale of 1 to 5 for me. But it reminds me of my childhood, and that rules. I was 5 when the album released and I think a was 6 or 7 when the video hit the airwaves. Rickie Lee is on guitar and dad’s swinging around the sword that saved my mom and I from a home invasion while he was on the road and we were home alone. haha, wow, good find!! It's a catchy song, I was humming 'Ready As Hell' for a while after that!

Some of the footage kinda matches the song, but the guitar solo is like some completely different tune or something, pretty funny
