Mike post says Ed wasn't going to be able to stay sober during the album if Alex was around, and that Alex was playing like shit due to going through the divorce. Claims Ed told him straight up that he wanted Alex to stay home and that he (Ed) should play drums on the album.
Also that Cherone was a pushover that was there to do exactly as Eddie said.
So I think it's safe to say this WAS kind of an Ed solo album.... I doubt Mikey played on much of it either.

Was surprised to read this a couple days ago.
The intro to “Without You” sure sounds like Alex to me. If that’s Ed, wow.
Also I guess Alex hadn’t actually been sober since the 80s.

Is there any drumming on an album if nobody listens to it?

This is all totally plausible, and explains why the album was such a steaming turd.

No Alex, almost no Classy Mikey, and Gary Cherone of Extreme on vocals. What a perfect storm of terrible choices.

This is all so weird to me considering this was the first VH album I listened to front to back, LMAO.

To be fair, Mike Post wrote some great TV themes. But yeah, not what you think of when you think, "Van Halen".Love_Industry wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2024 4:17 am.... as if having the guy who wrote the music to Hill Street Blues producing was a good choice.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2024 3:44 pm No Alex, almost no Classy Mikey, and Gary Cherone of Extreme on vocals. Glad I was done with VH after DLR quit/got fired.
Doesn’t surprise me that EVH dictated that whole era.
I still don’t understand why Mike didn’t immediately quit and tell EVH to get fucked when they cut him out of royalties from 1984. I’m sure plenty of other bands at that time would have been too happy to have him join up and pay him what he was worth.

Like who? VH was the biggest band in America at the time... who else was going to pay him the same amount of money to not write songs and ride the low E string?

An album of Mike Post theme songs is entirely better than VHIII

Gotta like how they slipped TGAH in there.

And an obscure Rockford Files-spinoff that lasted literally only five episodes.

Well, yeah. If Ed can stay awake and help the doctors during his hip replacement surgery, drums shouldn't be an issue. I'd be surprised if he didn't.
