Why wasn't Black 'N Blue bigger?
I saw on the BJ doc that he was so impressed with their production that he requested Bruce Fairburn to be the producer on the next album. Gene Simmons produced BNB's next album. Why didn't they catch on?

Because they were not very good. Thayer has to be one of the most unremarkable guitarists from the era as well. They were also not attractive enough for the image they were trying to portray.

Re: Why wasn't Black 'N Blue bigger?
When he said that I thought he had to be talking about the BnB debut produced by Dieter Dierks which is fucking awesome. I'm not a fan of the production of Without Love from an audio perspective, but Fairbairn is awesome and did other killer records that sound amazing like the Loverboy debut & follow-up so good choice. Bob Rock being the ace-in-the-hole engineer.
So, good question. Around Hollywood at the time, BnB was 'the next Van Halen'. Never stopped hearing that. My guess is they needed more rockin' quality tunes like Hold on to 18, instead they went pretty tame with the 2nd record. Ball-less. Biggest reason I have to assume is 'not pretty enough for MTV'.

I love Hold on to 18...but don't know of any other megabangers. One hit wonder syndrome I guess...?

So-So songs and a band of ugly dudes were a bad recipe for MTV-era success.
Re: Why wasn't Black 'N Blue bigger?
They had decent songs and good enough musicians/production, etc, but nothing made them stand out. Very "Armored Saintish."

I like ‘em: “School of Hard Knocks”, “Chains Around Heaven”, “Hold on to 18”, and “Miss Mystery” are all great, and the Without Love title track is pretty solid as well. But yeah, other than that, B’n’B were fairly generic and inspired bands that did what they did a bit better.

Pretty average band. Without Love has two great songs. Not coincidentally, they were co-written by Jim Vallance. The rest ranges from good to pure filler.

They lacked in the song department and image department.
And, they were DAMN lucky to have been able to release four major label albums.

Re: Why wasn't Black 'N Blue bigger?
They just didn't stand out. Bland as fuck.
Re: Why wasn't Black 'N Blue bigger?
Their "luck" in that regard was mostly a factor of being one of the bands that got in very early in the curve, they were in L.A. and got signed as far back as 1982 IIRC. And Gene Simmons trying to revive their career/take them to the next level.Ozzy Stradlin wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 1:15 pm They lacked in the song department and image department.

They were "generic" before it was generic. They try to claim a "hard edge" but everything sounded overproduced and poppy from the beginning. In an era where bands with a much edgier sound like Quiet Riot, Ratt, Twisted Sister, etc. were hitting it big, they sounded more like late 70s Foreigner/Loverboy, etc. to me.
They were one of those bands that badly needed a "power ballad" hit, and their two attempts "Miss Mystery" and "I'll Be There For You" were just not very good.
Later on, they tried to lean on their "hard edge" but were never gritty/sleazy enough to ride the GnR wave.
They needed a Desmond Child or Mutt Lange and all they had was Gene Simmons.
And they were ugly, so they had basically no crossover with women.
At the end of the day, all that being said, it always just comes down to the songs, and they just didn't have 'em.
Also, this breakdown riff in "Nasty, Nasty" is currently rocking my face off.

Seems like Hold On To 18 is a big fave.
I find it being a copy of Heading Out To Highway by Judas Priest

Fully agree, Desmond & Mutt would have produced mega hits.aznsquirt wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 1:44 pmThey needed a Desmond Child or Mutt Lange and all they had was Gene Simmons.Ozzy Stradlin wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 1:15 pm They lacked in the song department and image department.

BNB songs were just bad.

I think "Wicked Bitch" is a really solid number.

No breakthrough song - Autograph had a similar look and Foreigner Jr sound, but they had “Turn Up The Radio.”

Re: Why wasn't Black 'N Blue bigger?
They needed more Chains Around Heaven and Hold On to 18 and less of everything else.
And to be better than just okay.

On my playlist I have:
-Hold On To 18
-Miss Mystery
-Heat it Up, Burn it Out
-Get Wise To The Rise
-Live It Up
-Gimme Your Love
Six songs from four albums. Not a good ratio.

Guess I am in the minority here! I liked the first 3 albums! Their first album is full of rocking songs. 2nd album would have been a hit if Bon Jovi had recorded it. But I will agree with others that they didn’t have the look to make it big.

Good band, but not good enough for getting bigger. Miss Mystery should have been a hit though.
