Phil Rudd's Solo Album/Drummers Making Solo Albums

Post by Neil Diamond Dave »

Just revisiting Phil Rudd's solo album, Head Job, and it got me thinking - Besides the obvious Dave Grohl, who was actually successful in putting out a solo album after being a Hard Rock/Metal band drummer?

History is littered with the Peter Criss' and Tommy Lees, who just couldn't get shit together and have their own successful musical voice.

Phil's sounds pretty close to an AC/DC album, with its groove and dirty guitar tone - But with a Lemmy-like singer.

Easy: Ringo.

Roger Taylor had some minor hits I think.

Don't think I own too many drummer solo albums. I have a Carmine Appice solo album. It's not bad, some great playing on it and decent tunes. Is Bonham a solo band?

I can't really think of any cases where the drummer went solo and proceeded to write the majority of the songs and sing on them. It's hard to write songs on a drum, and if they can't play another instrument they better get other musicians to help write songs.

Dave Lombardo put out a solo album last year...I think I listened to a few minutes of it...nothing great, not my thing, I'll stick to my Slayer albums.

The drummer from Nuclear Assault did a solo album circa 1990 under the name CIA. It's about as good as you'd expect a solo album by the Nuclear Assault drummer to sound.

Hard Rock/Metal drummers, not the obvious pop drummers like Collins or Henley.
