I like them but mainly there 80s stuff some 90s stuff and scattered songs after. They were one of the first bands I got into when I was nine and ten years old when Slippery came out back in 86/87.Plenty of guys like them I trade bootleg dvds and I see them on lists along side all sorts of bands from Van Halen to Slayer.I'm not a fan of what Jon has become and I won't pay to see a show for that price with the lack of 80s songs he does.Jon basically does Maiden sets the ones with too much new material that is not that good but then never goes back and does a greatest hits from the 80s and 90s with deep cuts from that era.I still put on some 80s Bon Jovi when driving time to time especially Slippery When Wet.

They were my first favorite band. My first exposure to them was It's My Life, I was blown away.

They changed the landscape of music in the 80s and never lost relevance as a commercial/touring force.

I really like everything through Keep the Faith. After that they lost me except a song here and there.

I love 7800.

Hard to believe Bon Jovi opened for Dio back in the early days. ThT must have been a clusterfuck.

First band I ever saw in an arena, opening for Judas Priest.

They were good from New Jersey through to Have a Nice Day.

Aren't you sick of Living on a Prayer? I couldn't imagine anyone wilfully listening to it.

Then you're imagining the wrong people. I still dig it from time to time.

Some fun tunes on the first 4 albums, but not much of interest after that.

Everytime a new album comes out, unlike their counterparts, they will play the shit out of it (sometimes almost the entire album). If you like the new stuff, it works out great. If you want a full greatest hits set, you're gonna be disappointed.
Starting with The Circle tour, I didnt dig the album for first time & it became a headache to get thru the new stuff. After losing Ritchie, didnt even listen to What About Now or see the tour. Now with This House is Not For Sale, I havent listened to it & dont really want to hear 10 new songs (yes, they were doing almost the entire album live) that I dont know.
So, some of the things I liked about Bon Jovi in the 2000's, I dislike about them this decade.

I've been a fan since the "Only Lonely" single. And as a fan, I can say that their output in the 2010's have been dishearteningly mediocre. The Bruce Springsteen fixation doesn't work for them most of the time. The latest record actually had 4 or 5 decent songs on it. "When We Were Beautiful" was easily their best song in the 21st century.

This is what baffles me about their gigantic success. Not only do I think their music is horrible, corny, everyman shit, but I've never even considered Jon all that good looking, he kinda homely if anything.

Well, it depends what in this case "fan" is.

I've purchased few of their albums, but as a kid thought they were really wimpy and not cool (Bon Jovi ballads were probably the most un-cool thing ever). Later realized they have tons of brilliant tunes and still consider their best stuff truly being great, great pop-rock, which I still really enjoy listening. But never been a "fan" in a sense, that wanted to buy their t-shirts, have posters, thought they were cool musicians or idolized them.

So yes, I'm a fan of their music and respect their catalogue.

The new Bon Jovi song, more weak ass guitar and solo from Shanks. What's the use in having Phil X in the band if Shanks is going to play 95% of studio solos and half the concert solos? It sounds like all the other songs since Shanks and Jon became butt buddies ... cookie cutter paint by numbers John (Shanks) Jovi.

MrBagel wrote:There are three distinct Bon Jovi's:

1. Before Slippery when Wet
2. Slippery when Wet/New Jersey
3. Everything else

Before Slippery when Wet was awesome. Actually a unique hard rock band, borderline heavy metal.

Slippery when Wet/New Jersey: Some good stuff, but primarily hard rock/pop but criminally overplayed. Hard to listen to almost any of it these days

Everything else: bleh. Keep the Faith had a cpl of decent songs, as did Crush, but everything else...bleh. On Bruce Springsteen level at this point.

I pretty much concur with this.

As a kid, I knew of the big three songs from Slippery and I always thought Wanted Dead or Alive sounded cool. Thought the same thing when Blaze of Glory became a hit.

That was the extent of my experience with them until I happened to see them play an outdoor festival show in '95 and 15-year-old me was actually impressed and surprised at how good they were (at that time) and how many songs I actually knew, became a fan after that. Bought These Days and then they disappeared. Then I bought Crush when they came back and obviously the sound had changed, but I still thought it was pretty OK.

Then whatever the next single that came out for the next album was came out and after that it seemed it was all basically "I'm gonna live my life" stuff over and over and over and I lost interest. Haven't even heard the latest album.

They deserve the HHOF nod though, for what it's worth.
