Worst bass tones?

Post by SchenkerFan »

I always thought the bass guitar on the Dangerous Toys debut sounded like farting.

Dana Strum in whatever project. Hate that bass tone.

Tony Franklin in Blue Murder. Fretless in metal sounds like ass. Fight me.

This is probably unpopular around here but Billy Sheehan. Not a fan of his tone at all.... But I will concede it is certainly identifiable. You know who it is instantly.

I dont think nikki always had mud sound. He had a lot of high end at times, which made for some nice 'clank" tones.

I like it but a lot of people didn't - DD Verni on the early Overkill albums. More like a clank than a tone.

Anyone bassist who plays with a pick has always sounded sub-standard in my opinion.

Agreed on Billy Sheehan. Great player, just don’t like his tone.

Joey DeMaio on some early Manowar albums. Sign of the Hammer may be the worst but Hail to England is also almost ruined by how his bass sounds.

No way! His bass made those early albums.

Tricky question. How many bass players really have a distinctive "tone"? I can think of very few players that have a good "tone" on album: Duff, Jack Gibson (Exodus), Geezer Butler, Steve Harris, Phil Lesh, uhhh... Not sure that Bob Daisley had a great tone on Blizzard/Diary, but he was very present in the mix, which is possibly even more important than having a distinctive tone.

So as far as worst tone? No idea...! You're welcome.

I’ll second Fieldy … that floppy Korn bass sound is unlistenable garbage.

I see AJFA mentioned, so if we want to talk albums as opposed to players, whatever the fuck was happening on Chinese Democracy gets my vote.

Like I said, I like it. But let's face it, DD made a musical instrument sound like a truck changing through the gears.

Fieldy sounds like he put the strings on, twisted the pegs once, and plugged in.
