New Rick Springfield album - Automatic

The one that started it all. Spreading gossip and insults since 1998.

New Rick Springfield album - Automatic

Post by TooOldToCare »

20 song album was released yesterday. Very 80s (by intent, he says) and over-produced but lyrically not 80s pop. A lot of synth and programmed drums. It doesn't seem like any of these tunes would be live performance candidates without a ton of triggers. A few tunes are growing on me, but it's definitely not his usual guitar-driven pop-rock. I don't think there's a guitar solo on the entire album. I'll have to listen again.

Given that he turns 74 this month, I'm going to guess this is his swan song. Maybe some of these were written back then and reworked for 2023. I couldn't find any album liner notes.

Thoughts if you've checked it out?

Released Aug 4. Saw a quick interview with him where he said he challenged himself as a writer to keep everything to around 3 min per song, so if you don't like one, another will be along soon. He also wanted to keep the same chord progressions for the verses and choruses and lean into the 80s albums' sounds.

Catchy album, especially for a 74 year old.

I wish he’d split it into two albums … 1 pop and 1 guitar rock.

Check out The Red Locusts album.

“The Red Locusts is an American supergroup consisting of Rick Springfield, Matt Bissonette, Greg Bissonette and two others. The band released an eponymous album, The Red Locusts, in March 2021.The album is a tribute to The Beatles and power pop bands of the 1980s and 1990s.”

Russell Morris/Rick Springfield Project. I think it's badass. Jack Chrome and The Darkness Waltz. If anyone knows of a streaming or download source, please share. This was the only tune I could find.
