This shouldn't really even be about if you liked Chi Dem or not. That was a different band. Bringing back two of the most visible members of the version of the band people prefer but still releasing shit that had nothing to do with them is shitty. Slapping a Slash solo on shit that wasn't good enough to release with the previous guys is almost a slap in the face to Slash and Duff, let alone the fans.
If your thing is just "it's cool to hear anything whatsoever related to Guns n' Roses," that's fine. I'll always check it out, too. But acting like you're some kind of "real" fan because you like it is kind of goofy.

Spot on, as usual. Chi Dem doesn't exist without AFTD, and 4/5 dudes who wrote AFTD are not Chi Dem.

This is a true Sludgers!Ryan81 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 11:13 amAgreed. They could release the original Rocket Queen tomorrow and it wouldn't receive one tenth the adulation that the Rocket Queen of 35 years ago gets. It's not a regular occurrence, but there have been instances of the classic bands we all love releasing damn solid material (or at least a song or two) and it is every bit as good as their classic stuff, but most fans won't acknowledge it.SterileEyes1 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 10:07 am Willing to bet several dollars that ~half the people here who say this song sucks and the Chinese Democracy album sucks have heard neither. Now I’ll brace for 8 or 9 “not meeeee” responses to this.
And another vote here for laughing at people who expect Appetite-esque material 36 years and a billion dollars later. The minute they do that is the same minute that these same people complain that they’re trying too hard.
For example, while some people like it I've seen a lot of people rip on Van Halen's "Me Wise Magic" when in my opinion it is one of their top 5 best songs. Had it came out in '81 people would think it was amazing. But since it was 20 years into their career it got a lukewarm response. I thought Crue's "Sick Love Song" was one of the best things they'd put out since the Girls, Girls, Girls album and I've never heard anybody even mention that song. It's every bit as good as anything on Feelgood.
Now regarding G'N'R and the CD detractors if There Was A Time or maybe even I.R.S. were on the Illusions they would be much more highly regarded.
So yes, it's true that the 80's bands new material usually isn't as good as their classic stuff when they were young and hungry (what a shocker), but sometimes it is and it will never get that recognition sadly. It is the fan's fault every bit as much, if not more so, as it is the bands. So I don't blame the bands for throwing their arms up and saying "why bother" and not putting as much effort into the newer stuff. He has never stated it, but if I were Axl I'd be pissed at the reception Chinese Democracy got. It's a really good album AND he basically did it alone, but all he heard was "where is Slash" as if the players he was using weren't every bit as capable of playing some great guitar as Saul Hudson was. Also, Slash has put out some really solid solo stuff that went unnoticed because Axl wasn't the singer. GODDAMN IT'S THE FANS THAT ARE THE PROBLEM...NOT THE ARTIST, THE FUCKING FANS MAN! WE MUST DO BETTER!
You wanna help? Here is what you do. When somebody drives by playing a song you like drop what you're doing and start yelling. It could be anything like "fuck ya!" or if you hear Electric Eye coming from somewhere start yelling "Priest, Priest, Priest." If you're in a club or a restaurant and a metal classic comes on put your goddamn fork down and celebrate. Stand up! Throw the horns! Leap into the fuckin' air man! LEAP INTO THE AIR! Show the people you love this music and its the best. Show the world you love rock n roll! Show them the spirit of rock n roll is alive. Make a scene. You won't get in trouble man. The other week I was at my local hick town casino and all of a sudden "I Wanna Be Somebody" came on. I lost my shit. I started yelling "W.A.S.P. !! YEAHHHH!! METAL!!" Sure people were looking, but guess what song is now played on a regular basis at that piece of shit rip-off joint? It's up to us to keep this music alive. If people think you're an ass for celebrating they probably think your an ass anyway. To hell with those people! You're no ass...they're the ass! Did you see Britney Spears pole dancing a few days ago?

Getting a good chuckle out of this whole ‘poor Duff and Slash being hired guns at Axl’s mercy’ sentiment.
…y’all realize that Slash possibly has and Duff almost certainly has more money than Axl, right? Duff’s got Starbucks investment money. He and Dr. Evil got rich the same way. Dude’s a walking pile of gold bars. They don’t do anything they don’t want to be doing with their lives.
“Perhaps” they’re just fine with how things are going in GN’R land.

Any guy on the street could write something as average as this. Talentless hacks. Proof Izzy and West Arkeen was necessary input on those early song.

Re: Perhaps
I think the new tunes are mostly just to promote the tours but also, if they are planning a new album, these singles are tempering everyone's expectations. Like, "We don't have another 'Nightrain' in us, sorry."
Once you do that, and the ghost of Appetite doesn't loom quite so large, people will be a lot more fair to the music.
Or Axl is super lazy and stopped giving a shit.

I liked Chinese Democracy.... production aside, some great songs on there.
This? This doesn't even legally qualify as a song.
Why bother releasing something if it's this bad? Some shitty demo from twenty years ago and Slash tossing some licks on it.
Izzy-shmizzy. Rose, Slash, and Duff wrote "Civil War" together for fucks sake. Surely they can do better.

It's fine. But it also should've came out 20 years ago when it was first recorded.

Axl and Izzy were GNR's primary songwriters. Slash and Duff came in and fixed up their ideas for the most part.EatTheGlass wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 9:22 pmYah, I'm sure they are all just ecstatic about releasing nothing but CD throwaways in 7 years since reuniting. GTFO.
The process taking place right now, where Slash and Duff are helping improve songs they didn't bring to the table, is how most of GNR's hits came to be back in the day anyway.
When November Rain was the biggest song in the world in 1992, were you crying about Slash being forced to work on a song Axl wrote a decade earlier?

Re: Perhaps
Hard Skool was weak. Absurd is really really bad. This is a step in the right direction but still misses the mark, it is only ok… at best.
I am a a huge Axl fan, huge.
CD is in my opinion a 6 out of 10 maybe 7. It is the best of all the GNR post UYI work imo.
TWAT is amazing, Prostitute is really good. Sorry and Better are good. The rest is good in pieces and all over the place in others
They simply work best as a team, dysfunctional but a unit nonetheless. There are parts of Slash’s songs that are really good Starlight, Back to Cali, The bridge and solo in Beggars and Hangers On is fucking brilliant. Ghost is good.
I think when you listen to Izzy’s solo stuff like the song California ie. a simple song, it sounds like Izzy said “good enough” but it has the total essence of GNR is at the core… give that to Slash, play a rocking solo and some leads, Duff’s bass.
In the end it’s Axl’s voice that takes it to another level, maybe he can’t wail like before but his voice is still fuckin magic and he can do so much with it. I’m sure he can still deliver a performance like on Locomotive. If he wanted to. It all just feels mailed in, you can hear it and feel it.

Thank you for posting that link to Atlas Shrugged! The verses are fucking really good and Axl’s voice is spot on. That is a cool song and even as a demo it sounds great. Good drums.
Bizarre to think this shit is 24-25 years old

Good read this thread.
I’ve not listened to the song, I’ve no interest in it.
I don’t listen to the Use your Illusion albums either.
Appetite occasionally, the songs have not changed, but I have.
I get more joy out of Izzy’s solo stuff now.
As for albums and new music, there is no money in it, why would they bother.
