Re: Whitesnake - Still of the Night (isolated Sykes guitar tracks)
Def my first go-to when its time to name the greatest guitar tone of the 80s.
I'd never heard the Bob Rock connection until just now.
For those who haven't heard it, apparently the engineer on the 1987 album took a week off, and Bob Rock was producing another album in the same studio. John Sykes asked him to help him dial in his guitar tone and Bob gave it a shot and the rest is history (while not being credited on the album, haha).
Crazy.

So crunchy yet beefy, like a Taco Bell gordita.

78 LP through two Mesa Boogie Coliseums.. Charvel strat on the dive bombs.... '61 strat straight into the board on the clean stuff...
... or Dan Huff on a Tyler strat or something. Believe who you want to.

Great tone, one of the best riffs/songs of the genre, but I always thought the solo spot was kind of wasted. As impressive as it is technically, it's really just scale wank. I would have liked something a little more thought out and groovy for a song like that.
