I know Tom Werman has a new book coming out and maybe he’d address this type of question.
did guys in the 80s double their rhythm guitar tracks?
I’m talking about note for note to fatten up the tone-
‘Too fast for love’ has that raw sound and ‘shout’ sounds more polished. I’d assume ‘too fast’ is only one guitar track
Just wondering where the sweet spot is before the life & charm is sucked out of a recording.

Re: guitar production question
Sometimes they did. Sometimes they just panned the same recording hard right and hard left on two different tracks.
Not everybody is on MetalShit.com and Blabberface fuckin’ dot net! Who cares? There’s such a small amount of people that do that. - Blotz

I always double with a second sound.
Less distortion, EQd differently etc…

Re: guitar production question
Like VVV I always double with different tones. Only exception is if I’m doing a cover and the original artist didn’t.
It varied in the 80s just like always. Van Halen didn’t in the Roth years. GN’R, AC/DC, and Aerosmith were similar in terms of one guitarist on either side. I’m pretty sure Motley doubled on Dr. Feelgood, less certain of other albums because I haven’t listened to them as much but off the top of my head Live Wire definitely is and I think Girls Girls Girls also.

And I assumed early Van Halen didn’t since it was more of a lead/rhythm hybrid.
Unchained could have been but he’s working the flanger
Re: guitar production question
It was pretty standard to record at least two copies of the rhythm track, hard panning them left and right. Randy Rhoads' stuff is all triple tracked, with left, right and center.
Live Wire is two guitar tracks panned left and right...you can hear it where the doubles aren't quite perfect like the little fill lick towards the beginning.

I like these threads where Sleek and others get to educate me on stuff. It’s always interesting.

Re: guitar production question
Some like to put a very quick delay (55ish?)
And pan opposite.
This will give a larger sound to one guitar track.

Re: guitar production question
i tend to doubke track my rhythms, my other guitarist does as well...for solos? depends on the solo and the tone i'm after...i've heard that zakk sometimes recorded 4 tracks of rhythms around no more tears...evh would mic up 6 halfstacks in later years and just record one performance with all 6 amps eq'ed differently...stevie ray vaughn did something similar accd to an old guitar world...everyone approaches it differently...d.m.
