Your Fav Duran Duran Song (and why)

Post by WentEast »

DD gets a lot of love/respect on this board. So what’s your go-to DD tune, and keeps bringing you back?

I’ll start - Is There Something I Should Know. Strong opening, great guitar work by Andy on verse, killer bass work on the outro from John, and just the right amount of synth. Good video too - they did not just try to recreate the Rio era beach/suites vibe but went for a new concept, tho I agree with Andy that the whole guys measuring trees bit was weird.

What about you?

I love D2, and there are so many songs to pick from. For some reason, mine is Save A Prayer. I'd not normally put a slow song at the top. I love the melody and harmonies. I also like the story it tells. It's that simple.

Say a prayer. It is very tumeful and melkodic. Its one of those songs that seems to have come out of the ether where it waited for centuries to be summoned.

Too many good songs from them to pick just one, but if I had to choose, I'd say "Hungry Like the Wolf" just because it's a new wave classic with a perfect guitar and synth riff to it.

It's so hard to pick...

But if I had to choose, I'd have to go with either "Come Undone" or "Ordinary World".

For the longest time it was a tie between Planet Earth, Rio and Hungry Like WVH. But I've heard those tunes a million times. Still love them, but they're no longer top of list for me...

Now it's a tie between Hold Back the Rain, a killer deep cut from Rio and Being Followed from the brilliant All You Need is Now album. Both are similar in terms of the energy and I think All You Need is Now sounds a lot like a followup album to Rio, I like it way more than Seven and the Ragged Tiger, that album was the beginning of a steady decline they went through. A lot of bands try to get back to the sound and feel of their earlier records and fail miserably (Black Sabbath's 13 comes to mind), but Duran hit a homerun with their 13th album.

That video began my Simon Lebon, New Wave mullet phase in the mid-80s. Thankfully I have no pictures from then.

Hit song - Girls on Film
Great video and classic DD vibe & lyrics.

Deep cut - First Impression
As close to hard rock as they get.

“Rio” - most likely that it features some of the most ridiculous bass playing ever laid down on tape.

“New Moon On Monday” - the chorus is outstanding.

“Ordinary World” - translates so well in a live setting. A song that pulls hard on the heart strings.

makes the fact that Nikki Sixx has given up playing 8th notes because its too hard even more pathetic.

I had to think about it for a minute, because Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf are pretty awesome. And so are a bunch of others.
But I think, A View To A Kill, is my favorite.
And why?
It was a great time in my life. I was young, getting ready to move to a different state, and it was a really cool song and I was a James Bond fan, since I was old enough to watch movies!
In case anyone was wondering, Roger Moore was my favorite Bond!

And I have fond memories of that movie when I was kid.

The darker songs off the first two albums are my favorites. New Religion, The Chauffeur, Nightboat, Friends Of Mine, and Tel Aviv (the instrumental, not that old demo one with lyrics). Man, it's hard to pick one....in fact I can't. I forgot Reach Up For The Sun Rise as well. Fuck, they had a lot of good songs! Who would've thought in the 80's when everybody thought that they were a flash in the pan teeny-bop band that they would still be popular 40 years later?

It's been good to see them get recognized as of late for what a good band they are. John Taylor is one of the best bassists I've ever heard. Those first two albums had some amazing bass parts on them and he was barely 20 years old and had only been playing bass for 4 or 5 years at that point. He is almost suspiciously good. Listen to the bass part in Last Chance On The Stairway. It's up there with Rio. Those guys pulled a lot of nice pussy too.

Their side projects in 1985 were also solid. John & Andy's Power Station was pretty good, but Nick, Simon, and Roger's Arcadia album was great! It's very unusual music, but it's really good.

At the very least, probably their best song of the last 25 years.

Only 1 mention of The Chauffeur? C'mon guys! That song is A+ on all levels, it doesn't even really have a chorus but there is something so brilliant about it. Simon's vocal lines have always been unique but that one is really out of left field, it's like a roller coaster of melody.
D2 does it a lot but the minor verses with the major chorus really are their trademark in the early days.
