This week I'm listening to a lot of BEACH BOYS
Ever hear Beach Boys Love You? Shit's weird as hell. File it next to McCartney II and Trans as one of those oddities in rock history. It's cool though.

I dived into them a few years ago. Amazingly, I never heard Surf's Up until then. In the past, I dismissed them because of the cheesy surfer hits and didn't look into the more artsy stuff Brian Wilson wanted to do.

Beach Boys and Bee Gees puzzle me. One is a surfer beach music band. The other a disco trio. Yet, apparently, both had a second “secret” catalog of music that no one has really heard. Odd.

It's almost hilarious that you spend your entire life bouncing back and forth from hair metal message boards while having literally no knowledge about music whatsoever.DemonFilth2001 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 4:30 pmBeach Boys and Bee Gees puzzle me. Ok. Pet Sounds isn’t a secret. True. The album’s main single, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, was a huge hit.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 4:48 pmIt's almost hilarious that you spend your entire life bouncing back and forth from hair metal message boards while having literally no knowledge about music whatsoever.DemonFilth2001 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 4:30 pmBeach Boys and Bee Gees puzzle me. Re: This week I'm listening to a lot of BEACH BOYS
I am not a Beach Boys type guy, but I have listened to 'Pet Sounds' several times based on the high regard it holds among many musicians.
I just don't get it, it's not my cup of tea for sure.
To quote Hendrix from Third Stone From the Sun:
"Your people I do not understand
So to you I shall put an end
And you'll
Never hear
Surf music again"

Listen to the bass part on God Only Knows. It's not comped. Brian wrote every single note of it.
It's supernatural.
Brian had a uncanny knack for creating tension and resolution in music.

Any song where you palm mute the bass on purpose the entire song is definitely not for me haha, thanks for that though.
I saw a Carol Kaye mention, she's the Wrecking Crew bassist, that chick is awesome!!

I remember singing Sloop John B in elementary school music class. Always hated that song. Good Vibrations is alright though...

When do we discuss the Beach Boys' seminal work with the Fat Boys?

The Fat Boys were always kind of a novelty act, weren't they? They also did a remake of Chubby Checker's "The Twist" that went top 40 the following year.Mister Freeze wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 5:06 pm When do we discuss the Beach Boys' seminal work with the Fat Boys?

Lot of the artsy stuff gets accolades from artsy people, but their artistic peak was stuff like “Don’t Worry Baby” and “Lonely Sea”. Pet Sounds, Surfs Up, etc were great, but the earlier stuff is where it’s at.
Saying that, their final album had some fuckin gems on it

I've always loved their album "Sunflower." While not as memorable as some of the albums from the 1960s it was cool that the rest of the band had a chance to do more writing. Dennis Wilson has 2-3 songs on that album that are fantastic.

There is a collection of outtakes called "Feel Flows" that has a cappella and other alternate versions.

Re: This week I'm listening to a lot of BEACH BOYS
Love You is my favorite Beach Boys album. It's the last time The Beach Boys tried something different that actually was awesome. Although Brian's vocals are burned out at this point, they still somehow work. My favorite song from this album is "I'll Bet He's Nice". The folks on r/thebeachboys swear by "Ding Dang", but I don't remember how it sounds. I'll have to listen to the album again some time.
Smile is certainly worth listening to at least once. The standouts are "Heroes and Villains", "Surf's Up", and of course, "Good Vibrations". I listened to it for the first time a month or so ago. I would say it is about as artsy as any Beach Boys album could be; not sure about Brian's solo albums because I haven't listened to any yet.
Speaking of "Surf's Up", the album of the same name where that song also shows up, though maybe arranged differently (haven't done a side-to-side comparison so I don't know off the top of my head), is another favorite of mine. If you want a dark, melancholy album to listen to, this one fits the bill, though please feel free to skip "Student Demonstration Time"; it's the drizzling shits. The moodiness reflects Brian's apparent bout of depression at the time.
Two more I'll recommend are Wild Honey and Friends. Both were conscious attempts to create simpler songs, with the former being R&B-inspired and the latter being...well...very chill.
