Jani Lane would have been 60 today

Post by TeslaFan »

Hopefully resting in peace. One of the best songwriters of his genre. He would have been 60 today. Went way too early. He left us with songs that have stood the test of time. Far from perfect but he was a talent for sure.

From my perception Jenny was universally loved. Unfortunately he didn’t see it that it himself and it cost him his life. Wrote some great songs and I think would have been a big time songwriter for Nashville artists had he been able to continue his life.

Listen to Dog Eat Dog. It's an essential release for Sludgers.

Jeff Hanneman (Slayer) was one day old than Jani Lane.

If he had made it through the dark years, he'd probably be doing pretty good right now. He totally missed the touring and licensing comeback for '80s acts.

Although I don't think he would've handled COVID lockdowns well.

It's funny that OP posted this. I just recently got on a Warrant kick and listened to all of Dog Eat Dog for the first time. It's a solid album with no bad songs, but I can see how the darker songs, mainly the first 3 or 4 on the album, being mixed with the typical fun rock songs would confuse and maybe turn off their previous teeny-bopper, mostly female, fans. I mean, the second song, "Hole in My Wall" is about voyeurism, right? Chicks love that...

I'm not sure "Machine Gun" was the best choice for the lead track; even though it has the right energy for a lead track on an album for this era, the song itself is not particularly strong. It may be my least favorite.

The rest is great, although “Andy Warhol Was Right” is depressing as all get out. I think it's admirable they tried branching out and doing something new on this album.

One last comment about the album...not a fan of that cover.

Then, I listened to Cherry Pie for the umpteenth time. Still a classic album from that time!

Dog Eat Dog is my favorite Warrant album and the only time I saw the original band on tour in a theater show. Great fucking show, opening with Machine Gun. Loved the dark side of his songwriting. For me, every song is good and tells a story.

He was good. I was a fan but I don’t get all the Sludge love he gets. I wouldn’t put him in the Top 10 or anything. Maybe Top 30.

I could probably list twenty songwriters from our genre while were better.

That being said, I wish he was still around playing gigs and living a healthy, happy life.

Dog Eat Dog is the best album he and the band ever did. It would’ve been awesome to see them in arenas. I checked out after that.

Yeah the whole idea that the Cherry Pie Guy was a songwriting genius is one of the weirdest Sludge tropes ever.

Pretty sure he beat John Lennon in a songwriting poll on here back in the day. Or at least one of the songwriting Beatles
