RIP Helix drummer Greg “Fritz” Hinz

Post by WOLF »

RIP to classic era Helix drummer Greg “Fritz” Hinz. You guys might remember him as the blond-haired, half clothed, wild man drummer in their videos and at their shows. He was with the band, on and off, for 40 years and played on all their classic era records. A great drummer and even better person, who will be missed on the Canadian rock scene.

Brian Vollmer penned a lovely message on Hekix’s FB page last night:

RIP. Fuck Cancer!

I'd bet most Canadian Sludgers has seen this guy live at least once.

Always sad when we lose another one from our past.

A hearty cheers and RIP to one bad ass rock drummer

I went on a Helix deep dive a few months back after getting 'Heavy Metal Love' stuck in my head for a few days.

This turned into a Brian Vollmer solo rabbit hole.

'Old Time Music Party' is a great album to have a several beverages with!!
It's good to be bad
It's the best time you'll ever have
What the hell is this ultra sad
Pray for your cool and work on that ass!

Sad... I loved this band... and heard them on the Radio in Wisconsin a lot in the early/mid 80's....

My first bands played a few songs live, including "Heavy Metal Love"

Nice to see the love and respect for an excellent, honest, hard working band. Given my age I came on board with their third album, No Rest For The Wicked, and if you make a playlist of that and the 3-4 albums that followed you’ll find yourself rockin’ all afternoon.

No Rest For The Wicked
Walkin’ The Razor’s Edge
Long Way To Heaven
Wild In The Streets
Back For Another Taste

1983-1990: all good/great/excellent… and live, just stellar. Growing up in Eastern Canada I saw them countless times, in every sized venue from bars to arenas. Always a good time. Fritz, Brian, Daryl, Paul (RIP too), Brent, et al left it all on the stage.

Fuck. Shitty and sad. My band opened for them in 96 or 97ish at a club show. This was a time when that style of music was probably at its lowest point of popularity and there was a very poor turnout. It was a little depressing and not too long after was when I finally gave up on the bar band thing. I grew up listening to Helix and was a big fan so it was pretty cool meeting them. Fritz was awesome and we talked for quite a while and had a couple beers . He was like a standup comic personality, and very upbeat and positive about life. He had loads of stories and it must have been a great life for him. Helix made it fairly big at one point and he got to see the world and meet a lot of the greats. Damn good drummer too. A very cool down to earth hoser. RIP Fritz.
