Favorite Publicity Stunts

Post by Rocker4Real »

What are some of your favorite publicity stunts bands have done through the years? Of course there are the staged pictures of bands with centerfolds on the bed. The former manager of GNR said he put things out in the press about Axl running over dogs with his car. Axl got pissed about it and blamed the magazine.

Van Halen parachuting is hard to top. Maybe it inspired 'Queen Elizabeth' parachuting into the Olympic stadium in 2012?
Plasmatics' free gig in New York that ended with Wendy O Williams driving a car off a ramp into the Hudson
Does Matthew Trippe count?

Santa Claus(s) have been parachuting at events for nearly a century.
It's an old TV and radio station publicity stunt, like flagpole sitting.

Judas Priest announcing that they are going to tour as a four piece band after Firepower.
Then backtracking after a few days of fan reaction.
Very clever, Jayne, very clever.
Bad publicity is also publicity.

Honorable mention to Angel for naming an album Bad Publicity, then immediately withdrawing it. It became the Sinful album, their last and best.

I thought you'd be saying something about Vinnie's shred-fest launch parties for all those "coming very soon, honest" albums he's recorded.

The probably made up stunt when Alice Cooper rolled a billboard of himself pictured naked down a London hill into traffic.

Metallica playing all 50 states in 1989, which resulted in them playing a bar in Newark, DE because it was the only place that would have them. I was there.

This is my favourite, as every now and then, here on Sludge, or on social media, you get people referring to it as if it was real/legal/binding, and using it as the basis of their argument.

Truly the gift that keeps giving in being able to point out human stupidity and gullibility.
