The guy was in Skid Row and Anthrax but never made it on their official albums. Was he that bad? Was he good enough for the clubs without the star quality for the big time? Ever see him perform?

Scott Ian described Fallon in a German Metal Hammer magazine as "Er war ein arrogantes Arschloch".

Don't think you need to be a native German speaker to get the idea.

That’s the pot calling the kettle black.

Matt Fallon could have been damn good, but almost no one was Sebastian Bach in 1989 good. Tons of signed bands didn't have a singer anywhere as good. Can't really slag the guy in comparison.

Plenty of SR demos with Matt on YouTube for you to decide what he had or didn’t have.

I always thought he sounded pretty good on those demos. It'd be interesting to know how we'd all view him if he had stuck in the band and his voice wasn't always viewed in the shadows of Bach.

Here's a demo from the early 90s from his project "Fallon", it's clear they're copping the Skid Row sound as hard as possible, and his voice sounds even more like Bach than the old SR demos. He's solid but of course he sounds like Bach if Bach was missing some of the power and all of the upper register:

I remember reading that at one point he was jamming with Jon Bon Jovi in between his time in Anthrax and Skid Row. It seems from all accounts he was talented enough but not talented enough to make up for being insufferable.

I also remember a story where Anthrax was in line to open for the Scorpions and he refused to take the gig because he said they (Anthrax) weren't good enough, lmao.

He's always claimed to have written a bunch of Spreading the Disease and he's probably right.

Interestingly, I've never heard him make the same accusation with Skid Row, even though those early demos included several songs that ended up on their first album. That being said, he did get songwriting credits for Midnight/Tornado so maybe they didn't do him wrong.

Fun side note: One of the unreleased Skid Row songs from those demo sessions "Walk with a Stranger" was recorded by Trixter in 2012. Which is perfect because it sounds exactly like a Trixter song:

Found this flyer from Metallica's show Willy’s in Sayreville, NJ on May 7, 1983

Opening is Anthrax and "Steel Fortune" which was a cover band with Snake and Matt Fallon.

And a band called PREY who apparently NEVER STOOPED TO COMMERCIALITY:

Skip to 5:00 for the most out of place keyboard solo ever.

Is that a typo or is Dave Sabo's real last name Szabo?

It needs to be louder in the mix.
You can still barely hear the rest of the instruments.

I think it is. I recall he has Hungarian ancestry. Or at least his family's real name, they may have changed it before he was born as it is not in his profile on Wikipedia.

So I dug into this and couldn't find any evidence of him ever having gone by Szabo (or being born as such).

Anyway, funny enough I found this podcast with him and he literally starts the podcast by telling the story about how his great-grandfather or grandfather (he's not sure which) was named Szabo and the z got dropped at Ellis Island:

Makes sense. Szabo is like Smith in Hungary.

Fallon is like Robert Fleischman, bands did better after them- twice.

The surprise was how Snake pronounces his Americanized name. Say-bo. Just like the host I expected it to be Sah-bo, closer to the Hungarian Dshah-bo.
