Covers where the lyrics are different...

Post by Anthrax442 »

One of my favorite Sammy Hagar songs from the last 30 years is Stand Up, which Sammy wrote for the Rock Star soundtrack, and then recorded himself on Not 4 Sale.

But, it seems like he wrote two different versions of the song, because the Rock Star/Steel Dragon/Jeff Scott Soto version has different verses than the version he released himself. (I never had listened close enough to the two versions to realize it until today).

Any other examples of this out there? I know KISS rewrote Argent's God Gave Rock and Roll To You (and threw the II at the end to indicate that it's different).
Guns N Roses obviously did the same thing as Sammy with Don't Cry.

Great White got in hot water with Pete Townsend for changing "I see right through your plastic mac" to "I see right through that satan crap".

Apparently, you're not allowed to change words without permission, unless it's a parody. Maybe that's what the "II" is all about with GGRNRTY

And I know that there's stuff that's been done over the years with words being slightly changed here and there, like Slayer covering Guilty of Being White and changing one of the lines to Guilty of Being Right, or Mustaine screwing up the lyrics to Anarchy in the UK, I was meaning more like songs with completely different verses.

The Doro cover of Only You from The Elder.

I think they might be the original demo lyrics before they concept-ed it up.

Ian MacKaye (who wrote the song) was furious at that change.

Ice T completely rewrote "Institutionalized" to reflect modern frustrations and everyone who has heard it thinks it's a riot. No word what Muir thinks.

Doja Cat changed the words to "Celebrity Skin" and they make no sense nor add to the song.

I think Linda Ronstadt had a couple minor lyrical tweaks in her version of Tumbling Dice. I almost want to say Jagger even wrote them for her? Little foggy on that one but I remember something along those lines.

Type O negative - Summer Girl (banned Version)

Kenny Hickey lying on the sidewalk
Devil music from the house next door
So I step on over his vomit
Through the screen and across the floor

Summer girl make me feel fine
Always in the corner of my mind

See her smile lead me to the bedroom
Fire burning and there's wine for two
Feel your legs spreading out to take me
Just can't wait to get inside of you

Type O negative - Black Sabbath (From the Satanic Perspective)

Who is she that kneels - so respectfully before me
A virgin of snow white - purity
Do not fear - my fortunate one
Let us consummate our igneous union
Ave ave satanas
Ave ave satanas
Ave ave satanas
Ave ave satanas
I am the shadow - with the eyes, eyes of fire
I will fulfill your every - hellish desire
Come sit on this throne - here beside me and be mine
And we'll watch the flames get higher and higher and higher and
Higher...

This is just the start dear friends
For I have come to claim revenge
My victims turning, running scared
You people better go and beware
Your weak god can not help you now
Come, we will play in the fire

the flame still burns by strange fruit:
I live a life that's surreal
Where all that I feel I am learning
Oh life, has been turned on the lathe
Reshaped with a flame that's still burning
And in time, it's all a sweet mystery
When you shake the tree of temptation
Yeah and I, I know the fear and the cost
Of a paradise lost in frustration

And the flame still burns
It's there in my soul for that unfinished goal
And the flame still burns
From a glimmer of then
It lights up again in my life
In my life, yeah

I, I want my thoughts to be heard
The unspoken words of my wisdom
Today, as the light starts to flow
Tomorrow who knows who will listen
But my life has no language of love
No word from above is appearing
Oh the time, in time there's a fire that's stoked
With a reason of hope and believing

And the flame still burns
It's there in my soul for that unfinished goal
And the flame still burns
From a glimmer of then
It lights up again in my life
In my life, yeah

Keep rolling keep that flame still burning
Keep on rolling while the world keeps turning
Yeah, keep a'rolling
Yeah, keep a'rolling, yeah

And the flame still burns
It's there in my soul for that unfinished goal
And the flame still burns
From a glimmer of then
It lights up again in my life
In my life, yeah

by journey:
I live a life that's not real
Where all that I feel has no meaning
My life is like an ever-spinning wheel
Full of wounds that won't heal deep inside me
But my mind still holds some sweet memories
When love kept us free from temptation
But now the time forget the pain and the cost
Of all that was lost in translation

And the flame still burns
It's there in my soul forever and all
And the flame still burns
From a glimmer back then
It lights up again in my life

Now I, I want my thoughts to be heard
The unspoken words of my sorrow
Today, as the light starts to shine
One moment in time we can borrow
We must try to find a language of love
When no words can explain what we feeling
But in time, in time the fire will grow
And fill us with love to believing

And the flame still burns
It's there in my soul forever and all
And the flame still burns
From a glimmer back then
It lights up again in my life

Keep rolling, keep that flame still burning
Keep on rolling as the world keeps turning
Yeah, keep rolling
Yeah, keep on rolling, yeah

And the flame still burns
It's there in my soul, it's there in my soul
And the flame still burns
It's there in my soul forever and all
And the flame still burns
From a glimmer back then
And the flame still burns, yeah
And the flame still burns
From a glimmer back then
It lights up again in my life
In my life

Sheryl Crow's cover of the Rolling Stones' "The Worst". She just swaps out the original "guy" sung by Keith for "girl". I think Nirvana's "The Man Who Sold the World" has a few minor changes from David Bowie's lyrics. The Foo Fighters changed a word or two with their cover of Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street".

Weird. I can't imagine her fans would want this. Or that '90s grunge fans would want this.

The video seems to be a glorified Taco Bell commercial. Otherwise, I don't understand why this cover exists.

Someone mentioned "Blinded By The Light" from Bruce Springsteen to The Manfred Mann Band and they also covered one of my favorite songs "For You" which I like a million times more from Bruce's original. They shortened it because the original really rambled on and changed some of the lyrics too. Manfred Mann also covered "Spirits In The Night" but I think it was just the arrangement that changed some there and not the lyrics.

Iron Maiden cut the first and last verse off Skyhook's Women in Uniform and made two puzzling changes to the lyrics.

First, replacing "Flying to my hometown on a 747" with "Comin' back to London on a 747" which makes perfect sense and if they chose to play it live it could have substituted tonight's city like Priest did in Living After Midnight ("Hit Detroit/San Antonio/Amsterdam/whatever by 1 AM), but why on a cover song they never play live?

Then "She leaned over and said "coffee tea or me"?" replaced with "She leaned over and said - give it to me!" is just stupid. The original is clever and references a tell-all book by a PanAM flight attendant, the Maiden version is too basic even for a Brian Johnson lyrics. At least it was a "dog" that gave him a bone. Or maybe Paul just flubbed the lyric and they kept it...

Priest's Diamonds and Rust ditched about half of Joan Baez's lyrics and it was a good call, they didn't add any new words (or was it one new word? :) and still changed it from a very personal story of Joan's fling with Dylan to a song about lost love that anyone can relate to. Halford should get a credit for that but all he got was a hug from Baez at Live Aid.

Sinatra : Beatles Something and changed it to “you stick around Jack, it might show”. George thought it was so dumb he sang it at his very infrequent live shows in the 80s and 90s.

WIld. Yeah they were smart to ditch verses like these:

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust

However Joan sings "Our breath comes out white clouds" which makes sense if it's cold, and Priest sing "Our breath comes in white clouds" which doesnt.

Mustaine didn't screw up, he intentionally replaced 70s British things like UDA, MPLA and IRA with things late 80s Americans could relate to - can't remember but wasn't it FDA, CIA and USA? Or was that n Mötley version?
