That being said, I know what I'm talking about somewhat because I played guitar in the 80s and bought tons of guitar magazines in the late 80s and early 90s.

I never said he didn't have a career in the 80s, did I? But it's not like he was Hendrix or Van Halen at the time and In Step was what really solidified him with the general population not just the Blues fans.

I can't count how many times I opened up a guitar magazine and some guy would go "I've been playing guitar for 30 years and had never heard of SRV until your issue last month" That happened just recently again, when I was reading one in the store. So clearly, there are people out there who play guitar and are a lot older than you and I but clearly SRV wasn't that big of a deal to them during his lifetime.
