Now that the Magic are down 2-0 after Sunday's devastating 101-96 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, this is what Dwight Howard should take from his participation in these NBA Finals:

Approach the game like Kobe does.

Attack the game like Kobe does.

Love the game like Kobe does.

And remember this: the game is not Kobe's job; it is his joy.

Of course, there is no joy in Magic-ville after this defeat. How can there be? The Magic were one missed alley-oop from winning this game in regulation and stealing homecourt advantage. They got 34 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists from Rashard Lewis – and still lost. They lost even though they threw every different lineup (Look, Ma, J.J's back in the rotation – and guarding Kobe, too) you can possibly imagine at the Lakers.

"I'm extremely frustrated," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We had chances to win but didn't get it done."

They lost because Kobe would not let them win. And I'm not just talking about Kobe's 29 points. You expect him to get those points. I'm talking about what he does on the defensive end, where he limited the Magic's shooting guards – Courtney Lee and Mickael Pietrus – to a combined four points. I'm talking about the defense collapsing on him in overtime and how he deftly dished to Pau Gasol for a three-point play and 96-91 lead with 1:14 left.

And if you think Kobe is going to let up now that the Lakers are up 2-0, you can forget about it. He was unsmiling after the victory Sunday; unflinching.

"What's there to be happy about," he said. "The job is not finished."

Ask anybody who's ever played with him or against him. They will tell you that nobody works harder than Kobe does. They will tell you he never takes a day off; never even takes a play off.

Dwight himself saw it when he was a member of the Olympic "Redeem Team" that won the gold medal last summer in Beijing.

"The biggest thing I would say that I learned from watching him is that he doesn't take any possessions off, especially on the defensive end," Dwight says

Our Olympic team was an aggregation of 12 of the best players in the world. They were already rich and successful multi-millionaires. They were already supremely talented.

But while they were preparing to win the gold medal, guess who was the first one in the workout room lifting weights in the morning? And the only one who was back in the gym at night completing his workout regimen?

Kobe.

This is what the greatest champions do. It's what Bill Russell did. It's what Michael Jordan did. It's what Kobe does.

And it's what Dwight is just beginning to do.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy has seen the genesis of it during these playoffs where Dwight has worked religiously to improve his free throw percentage. Even more dedication and work must start as soon as these playoffs end.

This is an ultra-important offseason for the Magic. Dwight has spent the last three summers travelling and training with Team USA. He must spend this summer in Orlando, developing an offensive repertoire around the basket.

The fact is, Dwight is too predictable in the paint. Because his moves are so basic, Lakers defenders seem to know what he's going to do when he catches the ball. He had seven of the Magic's 20 turnovers in Game 2 after recording only one field goal in Game 1.

"We've got to take care of the ball," Dwight said. "… This is a learning experience for me. I've got to really do my homework and find ways to beat (their defense)."

Dwight must be more like Kobe this summer. He must work harder than anybody with the intention of becoming better than everybody.

Kobe puts in marathon six-hour, six-days-a-week workouts during the offseason. Which is why when somebody asked him before this series began if he has prepared extra hard for these Finals, it was insulting to him.

"I can't step up my preparation," he said, "because I prepare as much as I can all the time."

There's a reason Kobe has played in more games (219 if you count the NBA regular season, playoffs and Olympics) than anybody over the last 18 months and, yet, he is still able to tirelessly score 40 points in Game 1 and 29 in Game 2.

If the Magic have any hope of rebounding from this 2-0 deficit, must outwork, outwit and, most importantly, out will Kobe.

"I just want it so bad," Kobe says.

Lakers point guard Derek Fisher celebrates after hitting a key three-pointer against Orlando in overtime Thursday night.

Reporting from Orlando, Fla. -- Somehow, some way, the "0.4" shot is no longer the most memorable of Derek Fisher's career.

In fact, it might be a distant third place.

Fisher made two game-turning three-pointers, one in the final minute of regulation and another in the final minute of overtime Thursday as the Lakers held off the Orlando Magic, 99-91, to win Game 4 of the NBA Finals and move to within a victory of the franchise's 15th championship.

The Lakers lead the Magic, 3-1, with Game 5 on Sunday, also in Orlando.

Games 6 and 7 would be at Staples Center, if necessary, though it doesn't look good for the Magic.

No team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA Finals. Furthermore, the Lakers have not lost three straight games since Pau Gasol was acquired in February 2008.

Fisher had already secured a spot in Lakers playoff lore because of his turnaround fling with 0.4 seconds left against San Antonio in the 2004 conference semifinals.

He was twice as good against the Magic.

The Lakers trailed, 87-84, when Orlando center Dwight Howard missed two free throws with 11.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

After a timeout, the Lakers took the ball out in their own end, Trevor Ariza inbounding to Kobe Bryant, who passed the ball back to Ariza, who found Fisher open across the court.

Fisher dribbled twice toward the arc and lofted a 26-foot three-pointer over Jameer Nelson with 4.6 seconds left in regulation.

He had missed all five of his three-point attempts up to that point.

And he wasn't done.

With the score tied at 91-91 in overtime, Fisher drilled a 27-foot three-pointer from the top of the arc after a feed from Bryant with 31.3 seconds left.

Fisher kept backpedaling all the way downcourt, his left palm still in the air, a smile slowly crossing his face.

A timeout was called, and teammates ran over to greet him.

Fisher joked that his three-pointers were "maybe 100, 101, something like that" on his list of game-winning shots.

Then he got serious.

"It's at the top," he said. "Even greater than 0.4 because I feel like we're as close as possible to what our goal is."

True to his nature, Fisher was in the locker room after the game, reminding teammates that the Indiana Pacers responded to a 3-1 deficit in the 2000 Finals by pummeling the Lakers in Game 5 in Indiana, 120-87. The Lakers, of course, wrapped up the championship in Game 6 at Staples, but Fisher's reminder wasn't lost on his teammates.

Howard had 16 points, 21 rebounds and a Finals-record nine blocked shots, but his missed free throws in the final seconds of the fourth quarter were costly.

"We can't hang our heads," he said. "We still believe."

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The NBA on Friday quickly completed its review of Mickael Pietrus' two-handed shove into Pau Gasol's back in the final seconds of Game 4 of the NBA Finals and ruled that no further action will be taken against the Orlando Magic swingman.

A next-day video review of the play was automatic because Pietrus' shove was deemed a flagrant foul, with league rules mandating that all flagrants are subject to review for possible fine, suspension or reclassification.

Although it was initially believed that the Frenchman was at risk for nothing worse than a fine, Pietrus' foul -- the first flagrant foul of the NBA Finals -- could have resulted in a suspension for Sunday's Game 5 in the worst-case scenario.
