Oh St. Louis still has the best fans. There are alot more people wishing him well on blogs, but it's more fun to read the whining and they aren't censoring anything. Like when they scream in caps, "YOUR LEGACY IS GREED" and "I was more upset when Bret Hull left."

It's not like Pujols or any other baseball player gives two fucks what people write on a message board anyway.

It's fun ... it's fun.

We won't have the chance to boo. We won't see him play since he won't be in the same division.

Bet you they don't.

Any chance the Angels play at St. Louis in 2012 or
vice versa?

How many WS titles as an Angel will justify the contract?
1 title only
2 titles
3 titles at the very least?

Its a good question and fair question.

I can say this much, with both Albert and LaRussa now gone, the Cardinals will need about 10 years to recover from those departures.

they did it to take away from Dodgers

everyone in LA knows Angles best ballpark, best product, not a loser owner

Depends on what your version of "recover" is. They'll still be in the division mix next year IMO. Might be a long time before they get back to the big dance though.

Timely joke there. Never gets old, even some four years later.

About five years from now that Pujols contract is gonna really sting, but right now, I'm enjoying the fuck out of today. And yes, I know I officially lost my rights forever to complain about the Yanks or Red Sox buying talent.

It really sucks to watch a team lose someone who was the face of their franchise, especially right after they win the WS. Just more proof that MLB needs a salary cap and revenue sharing system like all the other sports.

I still call the Nationals the Montreal Expos of Washington - though it's an insult to the memory of the Expos.

Reports are the Marlins offered a lot more money and Albert still said no.
He took a pay cut to play in Anaheim.
I don't care. What bothers me about this situation is the hundreds of millions of dollars these players are getting paid.
There is the reason for the $12 beer and the $9 hot dog and so on.

Cards should be thankful they did not have to pay someone an absurd amount of money for the next 9 or 10 years.

The league is full of copy cats. The Angels are trying to become the Yankees of the West. Not going to happen. They can sign more players to 10 year deals and they still won't win.

I've wanted a MLB salary cap for at least 15 years. I prefer a league where any team that is run well can compete on a consistent basis, the way it was back in the 70's and 80's. It's now a system where NY has escalated salaries and the teams that have the means to keep up try and other teams such as Pitt & KC are unable to compete. I don't think teams such as Boston and LA would have such high payrolls if they weren't forced to compete with a team that has a $200M+ payroll. I'd like to see the whole thing scaled back with every team in the $90M-$110M range. Even if it meant the Red Sox having to gut their roster and be bad for a while.

See Expos, Montreal.

The original owner invested every $ the team made into building the best scouting, and instructional/development departments in all of baseball. Fat lot of good it did them.

Then you and I are in agreement. I hate what the Yankees have done to the game and it was really satisfying seeing a team in Tampa with 1/4 their payroll beat them.

It's all so sad. I felt better today about all this misery and then this. :(

Deidre Pujols: St. Louis will always remain in my heart.

http://www.ksdk.com/rss/article/290255/ ... -my-heart-

To the City of St. Louis and Cardinal Nation,

I want to thank each and every one of you sincerely from the bottom of my heart for the love and support you have me and my family for the past 11 years. In my time with the Cardinals, I have been fortunate enough to play on championship teams, and in front of championship fans. This community has reached out and embraced me, and for that I am truly humbled and grateful.

My decision to leave has been incredibly difficult, and your support is the biggest reason why. While I am excited about this new chapter in my life, it was very important to me to let you know that St. Louis has been, and will always remain, in my heart. I have been honored to be able to wear the Cardinal uniform the last 11 seasons, and I want to thank the entire Cardinal organization, my teammates, coaches, managers and staff for everything they have given to me as well.

We call St. Louis home and my family and I are so blessed to have made lifelong relationships in St. Louis that we look forward to continuing for many years to come, and words cannot fully express our gratitude to you all.

Thank you and God bless,
Albert and Deidre

ARod has 1 WS title to date.
I don't think that is enough to justify his contract, but it's a start :)

I still haven't forgiven the Cubs for allowing Maddux to win 191 games for Atlanta over essentially one million dollars. While I sympathize with Cardinals fans, the fifty million dollar variance is a ton of money. I can't say I wouldn't leave for that kind of scratch.

Pedro Martinez said after winning the WS in 2004 that he's dedicating his portion of it to the fans of the Expos, because if it wasn't for the strike they would've won the WS that year. Take that how you will, but that team certainly could've done it.

John Dewan's Stat Of The Week

Yu Darvish

December 9, 2011

According to his agent, Don Nomura, Yu Darvish was posted yesterday (Thursday, December 8) for a move to MLB from Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), the top Japanese professional baseball league. This is a process whereby major-league teams bid in a silent auction for the exclusive rights to negotiate with Darvish. The auction is four days long.

Darvish is the latest superstar Japanese player to make the move across the Pacific, and MLB teams have been waiting for him to become available ever since he recorded the final out of the 2009 World Baseball Classic to clinch Japan's second WBC title. And now that the big names like Mark Buehrle and C.J. Wilson are off the board, Darvish becomes one of the best remaining free-agent starting pitchers available.

Each year in The Bill James Handbook we include the career stats of players that are most likely to leave the Japanese leagues to come over and play in the United States. This year, Darvish is obviously the most high-profile such player.

Here are Darvish's career numbers from Japan, playing for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

Season Age Wins Losses ERA IP SO
2005 18 5 5 3.53 94.1 52
2006 19 12 5 2.89
149.2 115
2007 20 15 5 1.82 207.2 210
2008 21 16 4 1.88 200.2 208
2009 22 15 5 1.73 182.0 167
2010 23 12 8 1.78 202.0 222
2011 24 18 6
1.44 232.0 276
Career - 93 38 1.99 1268.1 1250

If you are curious how that compares to the last highly-touted young pitcher that helped Japan win a World Baseball Classic title (MVP of the 2006 tournament) before deciding to join MLB the following year, here are Daisuke Matsuzaka's career numbers playing for the Seibu Lions.

Season Age Wins Losses ERA IP SO
1999 18 16 5 2.60 180.0 151
2000 19 14 7 3.97
167.2 144
2001 20 15 15 3.60 240.1 214
2002 21 6 2 3.68 73.1 78
2003 22 16 7 2.83 194.0 215
2004 23 10 6
2.90 146.0 127
2005 24 14 13
2.30 215.0 226
2006 25 17 5
2.13 186.1 200
Career - 108 60 2.95 1402.2 1355

It will be interesting to see what kind of posting fee and contract Darvish gets. Dice-K pitched a bit more at a young age, but Darvish has been more consistently dominant than Dice-K was. Darvish has had an ERA under 2.00 for five years running, and threw more than 200 innings in four of those five years. Will that lead to a similar $100 million outlay, like Dice-K got ($51 million posting fee plus $52 million 6-year contract), or will teams spend more cautiously after seeing the up-and-down performance of Dice-K since he entered MLB?

You can find more statistics on Japanese players that are likely to sign MLB contracts this year in The Bill James Handbook 2012.

With Theo gone I'm pretty sure Boston stay's away from this one.
