LOL! Defiantly got some giggles out of that.
14 The morning after the Sox finished off their 2004 World Series sweep against St. Louis, Henderson called someone in the organization looking for tickets to Game 6 at Fenway Park.

It's all over everywhere now. Greg Maddux is officially retiring Monday.

This is truly the end of an era. Maddux was one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Pedro, Maddux, Clemens, Johnson......

Waiting for the next generation of all-time greats.

Maddux seems like a good dude. I like that he retired and didn't milk it for a season. And of course, we'll always have this, which will never get old:

Tex really seems to be holding up the process. Sabathia is waiting to see if he signs with the Angels before he does anything and Lowe won't do anything until Sabathia does.

The Tex seepstakes seems to be what it all hinges on. Apparently the MFY intrest in Ben Sheets has went up a notch. Which says to me that they're not waiting for Sabbathia and aren't confident they'll end up with Burnett.

This is from Stark a few days ago:

There's increasing buzz about the Yankees' interest in Ben Sheets, possibly an indication that they're not confident they're going to be able to sign Burnett. As this blog noted two weeks ago, the difference between Burnett's and Sheets' 2008 and career numbers are smaller than you'd think.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/...e=stark_jayson

NY Daily News:

The Yankees also have continued to explore other potential rotation solutions. They have interest in Sabathia's Milwaukee teammate Ben Sheets and have contacted his agent.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseb ... vegas.html

That's a big question on IP. While Sheets is probably the 5th or 6th cheapest on the market, Pitching in the AL East I think would probably increase his DL time. Burnett hasn't handled it too terribly well.

The Mighty Red Sox are meeting with Sabbathia too. Although it reported it might only be to make it difficult for NY ( read: Pavano ).

Looks like K-Rod is about to sign with the Mets - 3 years/$37 million. How much you want to bet his arm falls off mid-way through the 2009 season?

Also, Casey Blake and Mark Loretta signed by the Dodgers and Kerry Wood may soon become the Indians new closer.

The Peavy Deal may be a 3 way with the Phillies that sends DeRosa to Philly and Kyle Kendrick/J.A. Happ to San Diego. The Cubs reluctance to lose DeRosa is holding things up but rumors are the deal is close.

Also, the Phillies got catcher Ronnie Paulino and the Indians are close to signing Kerry Wood.

I liked Joe Smith and I'll miss Endy... but SWEET MOTHER OF FUCK Aaron Heilman is GONE!!!!!!!!!!! Praise be to Snitsky!

So what happens next year when the Mets have three closers? Billy Wagner, 11 million dollar left handed specialist?

Interesting to note: Here's the quote from Putz's agent: “He’s one of the top five or 10 closers in the game,” Landis said. “No, he would not want to be a setup man.”

NYTimes quotes Omar as saying he already talked to Putz and was assured he has no problems being a set up man.

Hmmmmmmm...

Wagner's out for the year already, hence why they were on the market for a closer to begin with. They said he MIGHT return in like August/September but don't count on it.

Somehow the 10 year $200M deal Teixeira signs with them is not going to be the same thing at all as Sabathia's deal with the Yankees. Just watch.

Pitchers are always a riskier bet than hitters, but yeah. However, that CC contract is pretty scary. The no-trade and opt-out clauses (if indeed they get done) make it a scary proposition for the Yanks.

Oh, I almost forgot - nice persecution complex, Yankee fan.

I know pitchers are riskier but he's shit up the thread with how this is a terrible deal for the Yankees and CC and they'll both regret and he'll flame out and he can't handle the spotlight, blah blah blah. But wait, Teixeira will only come to Boston because he REALLY wants to play there, and he's a big time guy, etc. Persecution complex? More like pointing out irony.

Well, I think in this case Teixeira will be able to handle Boston, with all the other "folk heroes" they have there. Fenway is perfect for Teixeira.

And it really is a terrible deal for the Yankees. He fades. He is at a risky age. He has an out clause.

If the Yanks win the WS this year and CC is unhittable in the playoffs, then it was worth every penny.

Otherwise, bad deal.

It just looks like another "keep him away from Boston" deal.

I'm actually surprised Omar dealt Endy. He LOVES that guy dating back tot heir days in Montreal.

Hmmmm - you think the Mets want to be covered if their closer goes down this year? They know exactly why they lost the division title last year.

Couldn't disagree with you more.

Boston was never interested in Sabathia. Their passing interest in him was to jack up the price for the Yankees.

On the other hand, the Yankees are involved with Teixeira to jack up the price for Boston. Boston doesn't need him. They have All Stars at both corner infield positions. At this point their offseason has been a bust and they want to make a splash to compete with the Yankees' headlines. The Yankees will show interest now to start a bidding war knowing full well they aren't really going to sign him.

Sabathia is on the good side of 30. After 3 years there are 3 outcomes: he's been terrific so he opts out for another payday, he has sucked balls so he doesn't opt out, he's been OK but doesn't like being in the spotlight so he opts out. Do you really think he's going to be terrible?

The more I think about it, the more I hope Tex signs with Boston for 10 years and an absurd amount of money. As was pointed out to me in another board, a player who had similar numbers at that age to Tex was...Paul Konerko. Not saying that will happen to Tex, but man, long-term contracts are risky.

I'd rather see the Angels get Dunn at less than half the price for 2-3 years and give 1B to Kendry Morales.

Maybe not terrible. But pitchers don't usually fare to well when brought to New York. Especially small market pitchers.

Mussina worked out ok, but he came from a franchise with a lunatic owner, so we was already used to upper management politics.

Plus, there's the other factor of pitching for the Yanks - knowing you have bashers behind you to bail you out has a negative effect on a pitcher's focus.

By all rights, pitching in a stadium like that should help a pitcher's numbers.

Look at what happened to Zito. He went from a nice spacious stadium in Oakland, where there was plenty of pop out room, to a smaller park.

Yankee stadium is built to favor fleet footed outfielders and a nimble catcher. If you don't have the legs to run down the pops, it gives hitters second chances.

Sox offer Tek a 2 year deal. Possibly, give Tek a little more to give Tex a little less?
Yankees offer to Burnett is 5yr/80mil
Yankees to trade Cabrera to Brewers for Cameron
John Smoltz considering coming to the Sox
After Nationals offer to Tex of 8yr/160mil, Orioles offer 7yr/150mil
