ESPN 30 for 30 returns Oct 7

Post by Machado »

The new season began last night with the movie, "Broke".
Broke digs into the psychology of men whose competitive nature carried them to victory on the field yet seemed to ruin them off the field.
A very fascinating look at the financial struggles of pro-athletes.

Watching a film about how multi-millionaires throw away their money will set anybody straight.

Oct 9 features the film "9.79"
The 100-meter final at the Seoul Games was riddled in scandal. This one race still haunts the eight men who took part.

Oct 16 is the debut of "There's No Place Like Home"
A story of the most important document in sports history -- James Naismith's original rules of basketball -- and the quest to return it home.

I'm not sure I can sympathize with a Keith Mccants saying 'yeah, I made 12 million in my career, but I didn't get all 12 million'.

If uncle sam takes half and your agent takes ten percent you're still left with 5 MILLION DOLLARS you dick.
He's like the Liberace of bass & pot.

I forgot about that guy and the other NFL player I forgot about
what Leon Searcy.
His story about the girl who transferred money from his account to her's on the day he threatened to leave her was shocking.
600K taken from his account by the girl

Bernie Kosar was sweating bullets during the interview. I felt bad for the guy.
Not sure how uncomfortable he was talking about his father or were the camera lights too hot.

Rison still came off as an arrogant scumbag.

Searcy and the story about getting the 60K injury settlement in his last season in the league, having 6K taken out for child support then driving by the Hummer dealership and blowing $50,000 cash on the new H2. Talk about a face palm moment!

I hope that each NFL made a mandatory team meeting for all of their players to watch this broadcast. It had me looking to save every dime.

These players are ignorant.
The rookie symposium the NFL produces each and every year touches
on finances and you know what, 3/4 of the players still don't listen.

I have zero sympathy for these players who lose their millions of foolish
spending.
Blowing tens of thousands on strippers and multiple cars is foolish.
How else can that be described?

Tomorrow is the debut of "9.79"
In the history of the Olympics, there's never been a controversy quite like what ensued over the 100 meter race at Seoul in 1988. The match brought together Carl Lewis (USA) and Ben Johnson (Canada) who had been fierce competitors. Lewis was known as a savvy careerist who became an American hero at the previous Los Angeles Olympics. Johnson was his chief rival, considered an underdog due to his recovery from a pulled hamstring. In less than 10 seconds, Johnson edged out in front of Lewis to win the Seoul race. But that wasn't the end. Three days later, in a reversal of fortune, the Olympic committee announced that Johnson had failed a drug test, losing his medal to Lewis in disgrace. A mystery still shrouds the race. Was Johnson exceptional in his drug usage or merely the fall guy for a widespread practice? Six of the eight finalists in the 1988 race have since been implicated for drugs -- although some still deny any wrongdoing. Filmmaker Daniel Gordon, digs into the controversy, conducting extensive interviews with Lewis and Johnson as well as their competitors, coaches and Olympic insiders. He uncovers layers of intrigue, deception and favoritism that change our perception of the way this story has previously been told.

The Seoul race wound up being the world's wake-up call to drugs in sports. Now the problem runs rampant throughout professional and amateur athletics. As drug-testing gets more sophisticated, so do means of evading it. This powerful story forces us to question what we expect from our athletes as they pursue records in the name of national pride. This story from the past is vital to understanding the future of sports.

I had high hopes for "Broke" but was left underwhelmed. The film outlines its arguement just fine, but the format grew tiresome.

I tried to watch last night but it was late and I had to get up
early for work.

I'll get around to watching the film over the weekend.
Just think about the players that were racing.
Ben Johnson
Carl Lewis
and the rest of the gang.
Any of those 8 were capable of winning.

I watched the last 60 minutes and Carl came off as the villian. Felt a bit sorry for Ben Johnson. Yes, he doped. But that instant fall from grace had to be a tough thing.

The Two Escobars is, without a doubt, the best 30 for 30 and it's not even close.

The new film that debuted this week was terrific.
Benji Wilson story.
17 year old High School basketball star out of Chicago who was murdered before his Senior season began in 1984.

The kid was compared to Magic Johnson, but with a jump shot. I agree.
From the footage I saw in the film, he did resemble Magic, but was a better shooter.

Most surprising part of the film to me was the movie makers were able to get an interview with the shooter.
At the time the kid was a young punk, 15 years old who put 2 bullets into Benji because the two had an "argument" while walking down the street.
Tragic!!

That sounds like hoop dreams all over again
I'm watching that one tonight

I'm not a big hockey fan but HBO's Broadstreet bullies is the best sports documentary I've seen.

Who else has seen the new film, "Survive & Advance". Story about
the 1983 NC State Wolfpack basketball team that defeated Houston in the
Championship game?

Incredible 2 hour film.
Very cool the members of the team and coaching staff met up at some restaurant, sat at a table and talked about the season and their coach, Jimmy V.

ESPN 30 for 30 will have a difficult time topping this film. Might be in the top 3 already.

I watched for the first time on ESPN Classic the 30 for 30 on Matt Hoffman, His story takes place close by where I live and I used to be a BMX junkie.

The punishment he put his body thru in his early years and the height that he could get were just unbelieveable.

The show even got me wanting to break out of storage my "Diamondback BMX cruiser its for the older crowd" but I'm not in the best shape right now and I wonder if a 43 year old man would look ridiculous riding that kind of bike.

What do you guys think?
(I'm afraid I might of just let my self open for a good bunch of ribbing. )

I haven't watched the NC State one but of course I know about the Jimmy V story, is it nothing but a big ole sad story cause I don't care to catch it if that is how it goes.

I would guess 4/5 of the film revolves around the 83 team, their road to the NCAA tournament and winning the championship.
1/5 of the film revolves around Jimmy becoming ill and passing.

30 for 30 short
Running Time 17 minutes

In 1976 Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton met at Yankee Stadium. The end of this fight would go down as one of the most notorious decisions in boxing history. But the fight was tainted by riots in the wake of the NYPD strike happening just outside the stadium.
