Ever been at a momentous sporting moment?

Post by demolition23 »

This has probably been asked before but...

Yesterday I went to see New Zealand the West Indies in the quarter final of the World Cup. There are nine or ten serious cricket playing nations in the world, and we're probably ranked eight historically. So while getting to the quarter final is no big thing, getting to a semi is. We've never gone further than that.

Anyway, we unleashed an almighty beating on them, including the second highest individual score by a batter ever (easily the highest ever by a New Zealander or at a World Cup). The crowd was in a state of disbelief. We've only got a 50/50 chance in the semi-final despite this being arguably our best team ever, but still - it was quite a thing to have witnessed.

So what records have you seen tumble in person, what historic victories have you witnessed?

I was at a Syracuse -Georgetown basketball game that briefly held the record for the largest attendance at a regular season NCAA hoops game.

I was also at the famous Philly -Dallas "4th and one" game where Emmitt Smith was stopped twice in short yardage and the Eagles won the game on a last second FG.

Nice. I could've gone to the game where New Zealand qualified for the 2010 World Cup, but didn't bother...

a Super bowl and an NFC Championship both at the Superdome. I don't know about momentous but certainly the place to be at that time and place.

Turned out it wasn't as momentous as it seemed at the time but I was at the AFC Championship game when the Patriots beat the Chargers to go to 18-0.

New Zealand in the final. Great job.

If the Aussies don't beat India, I hope New Zealand go all the way.
If they do win it all, it will surely be one of the countries greatest sporting achievements. Their semi final win over South Africa will be remembered forever.

The West Indies game was one of the most dominant displays the Black Caps have ever delivered, but that South Africa game is the stuff of folklore. Just amazing. I was sitting at home by myself after a long day at work watching the last 25 overs with my heart beating out of my chest it was so tense.

Super Bowl XLI - Colts vs. Bears in Miami (in the fucking rain)

Randy Johnson's perfect game - May 18, 2004 vs the Braves in Atlanta

1985 Iron Bowl - Alabama defeats Auburn on "the kick" - a 53 yarder by Van Tffin with no time left

2013 Iron Bowl - The "kick six" game... still pissed about that one

And a couple that were momentous to me:

Thursday, 9/9/2004 - Troy Trojans defeat highly ranked Missouri Tigers (with Heisman candidate QB Brad Smith) 24-14

Friday, 9/14/2007 - Troy Trojans defeat Oklahoma State Cowboys 41-23

It's either MMA or Wrestling. Neither momentous nor sport.

I was there for the Choke at Doak, when the University of Florida had a 31-3 lead over FSU in the 4th quarter. FSU came back and the game ended 31-31. (And then FSU beat UF in a rematch at the Sugar Bowl - The 5th Quarter in the French Quarter - to finish the season)

I was also at the very last game the 49ers ever played at Candlestick. (My wife's a 49ers fan and had never been to a game before).

Technically, no. But I was in San Francisco during the Superbowl in 1981 and could hear the crowd cheering. I was only 8 and didn't give a shit.

Edit: I used here for hear.

The Choke is one of my favorite games ever. A tie never felt so good.

I have been to 5 World Series (1989, 2002, 2010, 2012, 2014). Four no hitters and one perfect game. I thought the no hitters were a big deal at the time, but they really are not except for the Nolan Ryan one in 1990.

How the hell have you been to every single Giants WS since they moved to SF?

Were the two no hitters for Lincecum and perfecto Matt Cain?
