This troll on the NYP article had me weeping with laughter.

I don't really put a lot of stock on film criticism. Ever since I took a unit on properly dissecting films in 10th grade English class I've been able to watch a film and glean tone, meaning, purpose, etc. from them without someone else telling me what to look for.

Furthermore, I sometimes like films that might be considered bad by critics...in the end it's entertainment, and everyone likes different things. White has a right to his opinion, but it seems he makes a point to always be a contrarian so I don't feel particularly sorry for him. That article he wrote about the 'great art of film criticism' was ridiculous. What is he trying to suggest? His lofty purpose in life is to see films, then tell the unwashed masses his 'sooper edimikated' thoughts about them because obviously they cannot derive anything meaningful otherwise??

He's basically telling people they're idiots...I don't mesh with that.

Yeah, he's a pompous ass. He still made very valid points, IMO, about the cultural questions raised by the film, and the subject matter, AND all the related internet gangbang and groupthink phenomena.
