Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) - 7/10. I don't get why I actually enjoy these. The fashion and manners of the elite are kind of silly, unbelievable and unnecessary, and I could do without most of the Sci-Fi shit and fight scenes too. But the bitch is hot and actressy, and the proletarian revolutionary framework makes me all emotional.
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Since Captain America, I've seen a bunch to the point where I almost lost track. Here is a quick round-up
Amazing Spiderman 2: 7/10 stars
Decent sequel that didn't go overboard in the - we need to squeeze 80 different characters into this one to top the last one - formula.... but that's probably what will happen in the next one.
22 Jump Street: 6.5/10
It was funny enough to give it a passing grade.
Godzilla: 7/10
A good popcorn movie. Like the fact that trailer was cryptic enough that it didn't give the film completely away.... which is very rare these day.
I also loved the teaser trailer.
X-Men Days of Future Past 8.5/10
You really can't go wrong with an X-Men movie... this was easily my favorite movie of the year for about two weeks until....
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: 9/10
This is the best movie I saw all year, and even saw it a second time in the span of a week.

You got that right. The Counselor was the worst movie I saw all last year, and that's saying something, since I usually go see some pretty bad horror moves at some point during the year as well. But those are movies I go into with low expectations.stevo wrote:The Counselor 0/10
holy fuck did that make no sense…if you want to see some Cameron Diaz or Penelope cruz hotness….be my guess
but for a story and a plot…..BLOWS
The fact that the Counselor had this all-star cast, but had nowhere to go, was what put this hunk of shit a the top of my worst movies of 2013 list.
It was "The Happening" kinda bad.

I really enjoyed The Counselor and I'm a little mystified at the strong negative reactions people seem to have for it. I can see how people could think it's bad but I don't get the anger people seem to have towards it.
The Happening? Give me a break.

Heaven is for Real: 5/10
I went into it with an open mind, in spite of the story being not only a tymrod favorite but also his response to people who cast doubt on the supernatural. "Well, how do you explain THIS?" I sort of expected the film to be like that.
Honestly, I thought it was okay. All of the doubts cast upon this kid's story are from mostly Christian characters, who seem almost offended when someone verifies that their beliefs might actually be real. I don't know, that idea is really interesting to me--that confirming the idea of Heaven could be offensive and considered ludicrous by Christians.
I was expecting some heavy-handed Kirk Cameron shit but it's definitely a movie for secular audiences. It almost presents the problems the secular audience would have and then addresses those problems. Yeah, maybe the explanation is "Dunno!" but I thought it was interesting that a Christian film could be as much about doubt as it is about faith.
I didn't walk away from it with a changed mind, or even thinking there's any truth to this story (Jesus is black sometimes but then sometimes looks like Kenny Loggins? MIscarried fetuses are little girls but grandpas are in their thirties?) but I think the presentation was good and judging it as a film, it wasn't terrible.

"The Manchurian Candidate"- 6.5/10 far fetched, but I like Denzel.
Not his best movie.

Downloading Nancy (2008) - 9/10.
Worst title ever. Makes it sound like a shitty romantic comedy and it's got fuck all to do with the movie. It's about this chick who's all fucked-up from a lifetime of abuse, made worse by a square-as-fuck husband who's in denial about her masochism and everything, and she just wants to die like whoa, so she hires this other really fucked-up dude to torture kill her, then everything gets all complicated and super depressing.
Shot all artsy, no gore, just bleakness, with cool soundtrack and Maria Bello's tits. Best movie I've seen in quite a while.

Seen the movie before but had the itch to watch again.
Damon and the guy from The Office wrote a great script.
Gus Van Zant turned a great script into a great movie.

Draft Day - 8/10. Decent film with Kevin Costner and Jennifer Gardner. He's a GM with the Cleveland Browns, and makes a few deals to help his team on draft day. Feels very similar to Money Ball. Really cool editing and directing.

Eight Men Out. 6/10. Story about The "Black Sox" throwing The World Series in 1919. Great cast and reviews but it didn't really grab me.
Beware Mr. Baker. 9/10. Awesome. Made me really appreciate Ginger Baker as a drummer and how he constantly reinvented himself. His attitude is fucking hilarious too. He's such a prick that you've got to love him.

Sharknado 2: The Second One (2014): 6/10
As the ridiculous awesomeness of the original came as a total surprise, the sequel really had no chance to recapture the magic. Though the film has a "tried too hard" feel to it, it managed to make me laugh a few times. It also gets an extra point just for including Ted Striker. It would have been funnier on a pay channel where they could have capitalized on the stupid kills à la Hatchet or Feast.

We need more movies like this. A Star Wars/Raiders styled movie that is weird, funny, with great action and an awesome soundtrack. Wasn't a 10 because the villains lacked in development. Highly recommended

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Thanks for the review! I think villains often get under-developed in "first" movies like this where they have so many characters to introduce and so much world building to do. It reminds me of the Star Trek reboot where they really don't spend much time developing Eric Bana's character - he's just there to be the bad guy they go up against. Glad you liked GotG - I haven't been this excited for a movie since I don't know when!EddieVanHeineken wrote:Guardians of the Galaxy

Django Unchained (2012) - 8/10. Not quite as good as Inglourious Basterds, but still better than anything I expected, as Western flicks normally bore me to tears. Never thought Tarantino would redeem himself like that after the Kill Bills.
The Baytown Outlaws (2012) - 6/10. Gratuitous neo-exploitation with Billy Bob Thornton. Kind of has a hillbilly Warriors vibe to it. And Eva Longoria's hot in it.

Very funny movie and with plenty of adult humor that only enhances the script. Did not expect much but some people told me to give the film a chance
Plus, Kristin Wiig is so hot that I could watch any film featuring her.
