"Colossal" - 7.5/10
What a bonkers idea for a plot. Good performances by Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis in an alcoholic drama-meets-monster movie mashup. Some problems as far as the writer/director figuring out where to take the concept and some abrupt tonal shifts that needed more finessing, but overall a very cool movie.
"The Fate of the Furious" - 6/10
This is basically car/stunt driving porn. The driving stunts and car pileups are, as expected, batshit crazy. There may have been one sequence where it looked like, unless that was CG, 50 cars were piled up, and the movie stole a bit from "Face/Off" (I'll let you figure out which one that is).
The plotline and acting, as expected, are semi-ridiculous. I actually think Charlize Theron almost killed the movie as the villain. I've liked her a lot of movies, but here she gives these totally long, absurd villain speeches, and her face is largely frozen and expressionless all throughout. It's a flat, joyless performance, whereas at least everyone else is having fun, hamming it up.
So not as good as the last few movies (at least movies four through six), but solidly entertaining.

Assasin's Creed.
2/5
Good costumes and sets, big budget effects.
What should have been incredible parkour and martial arts were... not.
The story and script were pretty awful.
I've played some of AC3, and it was infinitely more entertaining than this turd of a movie.

3096 Days (2013) - 8/10:
Great movie adaptation of the autobiographical book by Natascha Kampusch, an Austrian girl who was kidnapped at the age of 10 and held captive in a cellar for 8 years by a psycho named Wolfgang Přiklopil. There had been many popular crude conspiracy theories about the case that wanted to discredit the victim, but it turns out the guy actually documented his abuse on camera, proving her right on all accounts. She actually checked and authorized the screenplay beforehand, so this film is without a doubt factual. And it's pretty horrible.
Sombre - (1998) - 6/10:
Experimental film by Philippe Grandrieux, associated with New French Extremity. I actually can't remember La Vie Nouvelle at all, but this is not bad. It's the point of view of a serial killer following the Tour de France while strangling a bunch of hookers, before hooking up with a disturbed woman who sticks around while letting her get abused by him. It would be pretty great if it wasn't so long and aimless. It goes on and on and on, then just ends.
White Dog (1982) - 5/10:
Wanted to check out Samuel Fuller for a while, but I guess I didn't miss all that much. This is about a naive chick who picks up a stray dog that turns out to be trained to kill black people. It tries to be political, I guess, but it's just corny as fuck. Kristy McNichol can't act for shit but she's pretty cute at least.

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) - FUCKING TERRIBLE! Glad I waited to watch it on HBO, and I still feel like someone owes me money back. 1/10.

Agreed! Maybe there was swearing, blood, and grittiness, but it just hit all the same superhero bullshit beats. I think i'm done with superhero movies from now on. Cause i'm an adult.pieceofme wrote:Logan = 6. Preferred the one when he went to Japan. This film was badly paced. There were some good moments, but also a lot of boring moments. And yeah Wolverine died at the end. Obviously! It is Hugh Jackman's last Wolverine film. Of course he was going to die!
yeah, pretty disappointed. Maybe 5 is a fairer score.

Sinister 2 - 3/10
Maybe I'll stay away from sequels for a little while.

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Really? I'm not big into superhero films which is why I really liked Logan. The little girl was absolutely incredible. It's a very claustrophobic film, but I looked around in the theater and saw grown men crying at the end. It even touched a nerve with me due to my own feelings on mortality, fatherhood, etc. 4.5/5HueyRamone wrote:Agreed! Manchester By The Sea
8/10
Outstanding movie and Casey Affleck was the right person for the role. I could be wrong but
I think Matt Damon turned down the role. Which was the right thing to do.
Very sad movie and nothing to laugh about but well written and directed so well.

Dune (1984) - 7/10:
Godammit, took me like 20 years and five tries to sit through this without falling asleep. And then I didn't even hate it. I mean, it's corny as hell, nothing seems to make any sense if you, like me, give zero shits about the books and backstory. It's pretty Lynchian in hindsight, so trying to enjoy it for its weirdness works for me now. Also, Sean Young is hot in it. Almost forgot what a piece of ass she was.
Cube²: Hypercube (2002) - 7/10:
I was certain that I had seen this before because I'm a huge fan of the original Cube film and really enjoyed the prequel too, but somehow this seemed mostly new to me now. The "science" sounds like a load of crap, but I still liked the whole thing. This franchise fucked so well with the concept of vulnerable protagonists, like anybody could die at any point or turn out to be a piece of shit. Forced? Sure, but it's fucking Sci-Fi.
Paulette (2012) - 7/10:
New French take of the played-out "innocent old fuck goes drug dealer" genre and it's probably the best of them all. Bernadette Lafont is a great lead as the racist, bitter, poor widow living in the ghetto. Making it all a bit gritty and political does wonders to the fish-out-of-water slapstick formula.
