Stepping Razor: Red X- 9/10. GREAT documentary about Peter Tosh; perhaps even the very best reggae-related doc that I've seen. He was an interesting personality, to say the least. Much of the audio is from a series of tapes he recorded between 1985 and 1987, which he intended to turn into an autobiography entitled Red X (so named because there was always such a symbol beside his name when he saw it on government documents), interspersed with performance clips (all excellent), interviews with Peter, friends, Rasta elders, etc., and other good stuff... covers his career with the Wailers (Peter insisted on calling Bob Marley his "student" rather than a partner), his difficulties establishing himself as a solo artist (highlight: audio from the famous One Love Peace Concert speech, after which he was brutally beaten by police), and his signing with the Rolling Stones (his band members were amazed at the crowds they saw when opening for the Stones, and goddamn, that SNL performance with Mick was goofy), plus lots of stuff about his anti-establishment beliefs, his spirituality, and his (evidently justified) paranoia, right up to a decent segment on the night of his murder. Really cool film.

Favourite quote:
Peter Tosh wrote:People is sick and tired of hearing bumboclaat "Get down shit you fucking bootie", seen, people is sick and tired of hearing "Darlin', I bloodclaat love you."
Wish I'd seen this on the big screen last year when I had the chance.

ETA that the footage of Dean Fraser (I think) playing "Many Rivers To Cross" at Peter's funeral almost made me shed a tear.

A near perfect movie, IMO. Deniro was amazing. Great story. Cuba Gooding Jr was really good too.
I kind of hated how DeNiro stole the fuckin' show in this one. I mean, Cuba's character was the main focus of the movie, and yet, here comes DeNiro with his fantastic acting and steals the fuckin' story away. Also, I hated how the movie relied on too much drama.

Barton Fink- Not sure I can assign a rating. I dug it, though, and it's definitely worthy of a rewatch. John Goodman made the film, but the entire cast did they thing.

Some really fucking funny lines.

Monster - 6/10 - Spent the first half not believing it was Charlize Theron and the second half feeling dirty as fuck. Easy to see why she won an Oscar, bitch took it to another level. They managed to make loves scenes between Christina Ricci and Charlize revolting...Bastards. On paper it's not possible.

"The Invention Of Lying": 3/10. Whoever considers this a clever, witty movie is a total douche bag. "What Women Want" was a master piece compared to this nonsensical mess, "Yes Man" a philosphical epiphany. Add gay-ass accent and an ugly flat-chested lead whore and you're in for a helluva shitty time.

Runaways. 4.66/10

Mostly entertaining, but it was fucked up of Joan jett to leave Lita out of the whole story. Just call the movie "Joan & Cherie" if you cant stand to have any of the other chicks to have a second of screen time. As said above, Every fleeting line Lita has is bitchy, and in the end they do a "what happened" paragraph for Joan, Kim, and Cheri, but not for Lita, as if she did nothing of note after the movie. At least write out "Lita made some records and married a fat annoying idiot who had to be included in everything she does, a la Sheri Moon Zombie"

Broken Embraces - 8/10

Not as sharp as Volver, but still, another home-run for Almodovar. As always, Penelope Cruz outshines her equally distracting boobs.

Dear Zachary (2008) - Rented and watched this doc based on many reviews read here. 10/10

Wow what a complete heartbreaker. It goes without needing to be said that there are three people in the Newfoundland judicial system, not including the shrink, that seriously need to be in jail. And hopefully the fomrer head of childcare services is flipping burgers somewhere.

Those are two of the most incredible parents/grandparents to walk the earth.

I remember this was a big deal at the time it came out. The local gov't & politicians were not happy a book exposing torture and rape at a state run detention center was being published. That doesn't exactly go over unnoticed.
one of the most awesome books i have ever read. and yes, the movie is almost word for word.

I've never heard anybody call "Sid & Nancy" anything but a shit sandwich, what the hell are you talking about? Not saying I hate it, but I'll probably enjoy "Runaways" too. That's kind of the point, isn't it? As a fan, you'll eat up any shit.

Enter the Dragon - 10/10

I never get tired watching this shit, especially when high. I say that Bruce Lee is the greatest James Bond never to have starred in a Bond movie ever.

Martyrs - 6/10.
I guess I just expected so much more from this.
Looked forward to seeing this for months and was really let down.
Not bad, just didn't live up to the hype.

Kind of a let down. Good for a Friday night view though.

A Certain Kind Of Death (2003) 7/10.

Very interesting documentary from the coroner's office perspective on death scene investigation, body identification, reporting and what they ultimately do when there is no next of kin to be found.
