"Star Trek: Beyond" - 7/10
Good film. Pretty entertaining, but not great. For a movie called "Star Trek: Beyond," there's really not much of a plot. I was expecting something much more expansive, but that said, it's probably going to satisfy people who didn't like the last film.
The one thing the new Trek series has done is to really make the installments action films. There's not much of the space exploration/cultural bridging that diehard fans of the original series were looking for.

Bridge of Spies - 4 of 5 Stars.
Tom Hanks stars, Steven Spielberg directs. Script by the Coen Brothers and Matt Charman (he wrote a movie about the Boston marathon bombing that comes out this Christmas, "Patriots Day").
Set in the Cold war era (1957), this is the story of an insurance lawyer chosen to provide the illusion of America's superior due process for a man caught spying for the Russians. Based on a true story, this movie is a great look back into our history, and a reminder of what we were, what we are, and what we may become.

Captain America Civil War - 8. Not as good as the Winter Soldier.
Purge - decent concept and some good acting. 5
Purge two- 6. The best of the three.
Purge three- 4. the weakest of the 3. Although that is not saying much.
The Legend of Tarzan - 5. Christoph Waltz basically played the exact same role as he did in the recent Bond film. He's pretty good at it though.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) - 6/10:
Tedious vampire movie relying way too heavily on over-artsy hipster references. The best parts are when they abandon the shitty apartment setting and go to Tangier. Soundtrack totally blows too, which is kind of a problem when your protagonist is supposed to be this rock star genius. One original performance by Lebanese singer Yasmine Hamdan destroys all the other music.
Buffet Froid / Cold Cuts (1979) - 8/10:
Absurdist black comedy by Bertrand Blier, starring Gérard Depardieu, who's wanted for murder, hanging out with a bunch of casual murderers after his own wife was murdered.
Spider (2002) - 8/10:
Cronenberg movie about a schizophrenic guy who can't separate reality from his flashback childhood trauma of thinking his mother killed and replaced his real mother or something.
American Hustle (2013) - 6/10:
Nice retro feel, but I don't really care for this con artist vs. cops type movies. Amy Adams was hot in it.

Urgh. I tried to watch that yesterday, but I failed my mission. Besides Ms. Adams hotness, I found no redeeming qualities. I switched over to Bergdoktor during the commercials, only to find that this shit was better acted than Bradley Cooper could ever dream of

I don't know, there was barely any songs playing. Just noisy post-rock shit anybody could have done. Why not at least let him play some Nitro on his new old guitars, like when he checked the violin? Come on, we're on Sludge, this shit is not right.demolition23 wrote:Oh man, I loved that movie, and the music.

LEGEND - Tom Hardy plays dual roles as the Kray twin brothers, based on the true story about their gangster lives in 60s London.
Great fucking film, mates! This one was a Redbox rental. But, it's definitely going to be added to my DVD library! Tom Hardy is fastly becoming one of my favorite actors. I've yet to see him in a bad movie.

Love & Mercy: 8/10
Loved Dano, but I really could've done without Cusack. Any of the other actors they tried before this could've worked. Jeff Bridges, William Hurt... god, anyone but Cusack.
But Paul Dano was great.
(Found out Philip Seymour Hoffman was planned to play him during the bathrobe-bed years. Man, even watching Philip Seymour Hoffman lie in a bed for an entire movie would be so much preferable to John Cusack. It's not anything against his acting here, it's fairly good, but man, why does it have to come out of John Cusack?)

Breaking the Waves (1996) - 6/10:
I've turned into a bit of a Lars von Trier nutswinger by now, loved almost everything I had seen. This was the one I liked the least so far. Too long and despite some great terrible stuff when all goes bad eventually, I was just bored. I could enjoy some obvious Christian themes in other movies, but on this scale, I just can't relate enough to that whole scene.
Red Sun (1971) - 7/10:
I normally can't stand Western movies, but this one was just odd enough to keep my interest. Charles Bronson, Alain Delon and a Samurai (from the original 7, no less!) in the Wild West, how could that go wrong? Add Ursula Andress and Capucine and shit works.

The Jungle Book - 7. I actually liked the ending a lot better than the Disney version. I was always disappointed when Mowgli went off to the village. I always wanted him to stay with the animals! Which he did in this version.
The voices for the animals were all pretty good. Shere Khan is a great villain, and far more vicious than the cartoon version. King Louie was terrifying, due to how huge he was. Yeah, it was well done. I thought the songs they sang were a bit forced though.

This. I loved the movie, but wish they'd have left out the songs. It would have been cool if they'd have just left Louie's song for the credits, where he's dancing around the book. Sort of like a surprise for fans of the original. The songs just didn't seem to fit, for me.pieceofme wrote:I thought the songs they sang were a bit forced though.

Just watched this one from RedBox. And I gotta agree. It was a hella good flick. Face/Off done right.TravisBicklesMohawk wrote:Criminal 9/10 What a surprise was. The film's plot is a little complicated and confusing, which involves Kevin Costner who plays a psycho who gets the memories of a dead Ryan Reynolds implanted in his brain in order to stop a hacker who wants to blow up the world, played by the glorious Michael Pitt. But it worked! Very suspenseful and original story that kept me guessing the entire time. And Gary Oldman is in it too.
Probably won't be in theaters for very long, but definitely check this one out.

Nice Guys - 4. Pretty disappointing. It seemed to be confused in regards to what type of movie it was trying to be.
Everybody wants some - 7. Killer soundtrack! No real plot, but then Dazed and Confused didn't have one either. It kind of ended abruptly as well. It was enjoyable enough. I was expecting a bit more though.

Not much groundbreaking horror here, but it was well done and the acting was pretty good.
Also has a different twist at the end.
They've already gotten the green light for a sequel...
