If Trump is still furthering his own business interests despite expressly saying he's now out of that game, it seems like something like that would not be difficult to trace. Is he really that arrogant/delusional to believe that he can continue to court business deals incessantly while all eyes are on him? White House congratulates Tsai on election win

The White House offered its congratulations to Taiwan's President-elect Tsai Ing-wen on winning the election Saturday and said the United States "maintain(s) a profound interest in the continuation" of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

"The United States congratulates Dr. Tsai Ing-wen on her victory in Taiwan's presidential election. We also congratulate the people on Taiwan for once again demonstrating the strength of their robust democratic system," said Myles Caggins, spokesman of the White House National Security Council.

"We maintain a profound interest in the continuation of cross-Strait peace and stability," he said in response to CNA's request for comments on the result of Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections.

"We look forward to working with the new president and leaders from both parties to further strengthen the unofficial relationship between the United States and the people of Taiwan," Caggins said.

Clinton OKs visit by Taiwan president

WASHINGTON -- Bowing to congressional pressure, President Clinton opened the way yesterday for visits to the United States by top Taiwanese officials.

Risking Chinese anger, the president reversed a 16-year policy and will allow Taiwan's president to visit the United States in early June to deliver a speech at Cornell University, his alma mater, the State Department announced yesterday.

The trip is certain to attract press attention, although the State Department calls it a "private" visit.

State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said future visits by President Lee Teng-hui and other leading Taiwanese may be allowed so long as they don't imply official relations between Taiwan and the United States.

"Any future requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis," Mr. Burns told reporters.

Newspapers in Taiwan reported last month that a Trump Organization representative had visited the country, expressing interest in perhaps developing a hotel project adjacent to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, which is undergoing a major expansion. The mayor of Taoyuan, Cheng Wen-tsan, was quoted as confirming that visit.

A spokeswoman for the Trump Organization, Amanda Miller, said that the company had “no plans for expansion into Taiwan,” and that there had been no “authorized visits” to the country to push a Trump development project.
