Donald Trump steps out onto the White House lawn in the dead of winter. Right in front of him, on the White House lawn, he sees "Donald Trump sucks!" written in urine across the snow.

He's pretty annoyed about this so he storms into his security staff's headquarters, and yells, "Somebody wrote an insult in the snow on the front damn lawn! And they wrote it in urine! Whoever did it had to be standing right on the porch when he did it! Where were you guys?!"
The security guys stay silent and stare ashamedly at the floor.

And just to give some perspective, there are a at least a dozen countries in NATO that were former members of The Warsaw Pact. Forget Putin; imagine if you are a Russian citizen and you know NATO troops, aircraft, and probably nuclear weapons are stockpiled in Poland, The Baltics, Czech, etc? How the fuck are you going to expect them to react?

And many of these same countries, and most notably Germany, will always see Russia as their greatest economic and military competitor in the region. These countries are too happy to see continued strains in US/Russia relations and will inflame them at every opportunity.

Obviously Putin wants to make a deal with the US and is becoming increasingly desperate. A deal would be massively beneficial to both economies and their respective national/global security concerns. Unfortunately the political climate in the US and abroad makes it difficult for any politician to negotiate with Russia without being convicted in public as being a treasonous puppet.

Russian main exports are energy (oil and petroleum products, gas, coal), rolled steel, ferrous and nonferrous metals and minerals. The greater part of Russian exports belongs to oil and petroleum products. Other leading exports are natural gas, timber, fertilizers, machinery and equipment, armaments.

Russia's population is under 150 million, the EU is about half a billion. Russia does have the gas that Europe needs, the US does not need it.

As for NATO, the Eastern Europeans have a lot of reasons to stand up to Russia. They remember. It's not like Russia has been annexing territory or anything recently.
