Because the federal sentencing guidelines recommend a significant prison sentence for money-laundering offenses and are largely driven by the dollar amounts involved in the crime, this indictment, which involves millions of dollars, puts tremendous pressure on them to make a cooperation deal with the special counsel’s office to try to reduce the lengthy prison sentences each could face.

It's selfish thinking/behavior. A lot of people have decided they're okay with their elected officials bringing harm to the nation all to have their emotional needs met and gain some sort of schoolyard-level bragging rights.

Look at Jeff Flake. It was clearly difficult for him to recognize that his own party had debased itself so deeply. But he allowed himself to essentially say to his own team, "Hey, bragging rights of our party are not what are important here, nor have they been all along." He basically said, "We have to concede to complicity, own up to some grave mistakes and rebuild." Trump supporters don't seem to have the intuitiveness or the maturity to understand that the ramifications of politics are not a joke. And of course they don't want to hear what Flake had to say.
