On the Sunday shows, numerous Republicans warned Trump not to fire Mueller. Knowing Trump, that will merely encourage him to fire Mueller. Getting told what to do enrages him. Hope he fires Mueller. Suicide is painless.

Graham also warned Trump against firing Mueller, saying, "that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency, because we're a rule of law nation."

McCain also just made a statement saying that Mueller must be allowed to continue his investigation (after a statement along the same lines attributed to Paul Ryan by Ryan's rep). I'm hoping these initial defenses of Mueller by Republican leaders means that Republicans really would view his firing as a step too far.

I'm just waiting for Trump to come out with another panicked "DO SOMETHING!!!" tweet followed by reports of him sobbing and curled up in a ball crying out for Roy Cohn.

Trump is not able to fire mueller. Only Rosenstein can. This happened with Nixon as well. He will try to order Rosenstein to fire him, and if he refuses. Fire Rosenstein. Then order next in line to fire him and so on.

That's why they're saying it's "the beginning of the end" for Trump if he fires Mueller. He's exercising power he does not have. Trump can say "you're fired" to Mueller, declare the investigation over, and then refuse to cooperate with Mueller. Congress would have to enforce the law via impeachment if Trump does that.

Can't Mueller just say, "No, you can't fire me," and carry on with his business if only Rosenstein has the power to fire him?

This whole thing with a Mueller firing though does seem like it's mounting. McCabe said he came to expect his own firing every day, and the Republican response was not very loud or full of objections when it happened. This feels like Trump doing a dry run for a real attempt to get Mueller out in whatever way he can, even if it has to be through Rosenstein. You know he wants it, and you know he really believes that if he can get it to happen, he can be protected for it. And his history as president has shown that he can. As has been said so many times before, Trump only gets by through his protection from others. It's protection from people who are too short-sighted to see they're only damning themselves in the writing of this chapter of American history.

If Mueller were to be fired, I'd be very curious to see what the American people would do. There would be something. If the Parkland situation has shown anything, it's that there are smart and unexpected ways of mobilizing and forcing changes. Changes in action or just in attitudes.

The longtime Washington attorney, Joseph diGenova, is expected to join the President's legal team at a time when Trump is taking a more aggressive approach to publicly dealing with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, lobbing a series of attacks against Mueller on Twitter over the weekend.

The New York Times first reported on diGenova's hiring.
DiGenova declined to comment when reached by CNN.

"Former US Attorney for the District of Columbia Joe DiGenova will be joining our legal team later this week. I have worked with Joe for many years and have full confidence that he will be a great asset in our representation of the President," Jay Sekulow, counsel to the President, told CNN.

A source familiar with the plans said diGenova will join the legal team, in part, to engage with the media and actively defend the President.

The President's plans to hire diGenova come two months after diGenova appeared on Fox News to allege that FBI and Justice Department officials carried out "a brazen plot to illegally exonerate Hillary Clinton and, if she didn't win the election, to then frame Donald Trump with a falsely created crime."

"Everything we have seen from these texts, and from all the facts developing, shows that the FBI and senior DOJ officials conspired to violate the law, and deny Donald Trump his civil rights," diGenova said at the time, pointing to controversial text messages between two FBI officials that came to light.

I think it came out because his wife is divorcing him. She actually left him because of the affair (or he left her, according to the chippie) at the time. They did get back together and have two more kids. It's divorce related. Page Six and the like are digging up all the dirt with unseemly glee.
