How many of you bothered to get involved or monitor your superannuation (or 401k I think for you Americans)
Are any of you putting your money to work instead of relying solely on your income?
Do any of you work as accountants, tax agents, financial planners etc.?
Just interested how people are looking after their future.

Was a financial advisor for years. Have a good amount invested. Parents always lived way below their means. They invested. Big house fully paid for. Now 79 and 82. They'll be my true retirement account.Hellbound wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 3:34 pm How many of you bothered to get involved or monitor your superannuation (or 401k I think for you Americans)

Re: Your finances
I've got three different savings accounts, two with my bank, the third is sometthing through my job.
Definitely don't work in the finance area....I'd be the first to admit that I'm dyslexic with numbers.

Re: Your finances
Including a nice pension, I have a hefty amount in my financial portfolio. With all the retirement rules, I still can’t retire at 56 and live another 20 or more years. Like you, my parents never treated themselves to anything, have no debt, and a lot of cash and investments. My dad passed in Dec. My mom is 83 but still doing well. If she were to pass, that would be my trigger to retire. I’m an only kid, so the house and $$ goes only to me. I’m not wishing for her departure, just answering the OP with my reality.DemonFilth2001 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 3:59 pmWas a financial advisor for years. Have a good amount invested. Second time I've received this advice. OH MOTHER.... can you come here for a sec?
Re: Your finances
I've read enough about investing to know how to diversify and not totally fuck myself up.
Not everybody is on MetalShit.com and Blabberface fuckin’ dot net! Who cares? There’s such a small amount of people that do that. - Blotz
Re: Your finances
Can you please tell me why you have three? Is there a benefit to having your money spread over multiple accounts instead of one?LadyJaneGrey wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 5:05 pm I've got three different savings accounts, two with my bank, the third is sometthing through my job.

I understand at least with different asset classes that diversification is good because it helps to try and mitigate against poor performance periods etc.

Re: Your finances
I obviously can't speak for her, but I have a savings account for immediate emergencies like needed a new washer, car repair, shit like that. It's attached to my checking account so that I can transfer money over if I need to. I also have an emergency savings account that is separate from my checking and would require a few days to transfer over. This is basically my 'if I lose my job and need to float for a few months while I look for another one, then I'm covered' account. My third savings account is one that I transferred an old 401k into and keep as a home down payment savings account. It's a high interest (5%) account, so it makes me an additional couple of grand a year just keeping it there.Hellbound wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 7:28 pmCan you please tell me why you have three? Then I have three retirement accounts, too. A 401(a), a 457b and a Roth IRA.

Re: Your finances
Well, one is a savings account that I can transfer money to/from when I need it, so it's more like an emergency fund. The CD and the deferred compensation plan are for long-term investments.Hellbound wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 7:28 pmCan you please tell me why you have three?
