It's not exclusive to the US. In 2002 Jade Goody, a woman in the 3rd British series of Big Brother, became a millionaire purely on the strength of being thick as pigshit. Apparently that made her 'relatable to normal people'. She got an equally thick and trashy partner, was in all the mags, spent as fast as she earned, forgot to pay tax, died of cancer aged 27 and the government took most of her money. Her only redeeming feature was as a cancer campaigner in her last year or so but there are plenty of others who do that without any reward.

I'm sure other countries have their equivalents.

Actually I think this kid will turn out alright. I picture it being a preppy honor student and insisting on being called a normal-name nickname to rebel against their parents. Not all defiency is bad. And their tell all book will be awesome.
