Freaky-ass movies

Post by Don't Damn Me »

Hereditary.

Maybe a decade ago I was talking about horror movies with some people and I explained why I thought a movie like Rosemary's Baby could not be made today: because modern audiences are cynical when it comes to religion. More than ever, people don't believe in God and the devil.

I was wrong.

Hereditary doesn't just pull it off, it is downright unsettling. Like I can't believe the guy that made it is just a normal dude. Maybe he is and this is just a new wave of Horror, but I refuse to see the next film he made, Midsommer, cuz I don't want to be rattled like that again.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre too, of course.

Are there any movies you consider too dark?

Great unintentional comedy with Tom Cruise singing.

I agree with you about Hereditary. Really took me by surprise. Bleak. When it was over it left me in shock. The end song, Judy Collins' Both Sides Now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L1UngfqojI was so jarring. Ari Aster did a great job Making Charlie the main focus in the marketing prior to release of the movie - it made it all the more surprising when "the thing" happened rather early in the movie. It made me think that watching it in the theater would be like watching The Shining in 1980. Great film, but I don't want to watch it again.

The only two that I can think of that came close in the last 20 years are The Witch, and a French movie called Martyrs.

Lords of Salem was pretty freaky.

I'm probably the only person on Earth who actually enjoyed the hell out of this movie.

Definitely one of Rob Zombie's best films.

You could hear a pin drop in the theater when "the thing" happened.

I walked out of the theater and saw one of the ushers was a friend I hadn't seen in 5 years, but the first thing I said to her was "have you seen this movie?" I needed to talk about it. That evening I met two young women who saw it and said they were afraid to walk to their car coming out of the theater that night..

And I learned my last girlfriend who I met after the movie came out it was also shaken when she saw the film. She's a church goer and thought that there was just something wrong about that movie, like it was too real.

I think it's more powerful than The Shining.

And from what I heard about Ari's next movie "Midsommer" it's just as disturbing in a different way and I'm not going to watch it.
I heard AA is doing a comedy now

Last Exit To Brooklyn. Usually in these type of working-class dog dramas, somebody wins. Not this one.

For some reason, we ended up watching Sybil in Middle School -- 7th grade. I haven't seen it since.

Hereditary and Midsommar are both masterpieces. Ari Aster does disturbing and chilling very well.

I watched Martyrs recently and it's definitely a fucked up movie too.

The most fucked up movie ever, but I love it. If you're into dark humor, this is the gold standard.

Weird. Isn't there a lot of cursing in that movie?

Midsommar was nowhere near as freaky as Hereditary.

Mandy was indeed awesome.

Clovehitch Killer
Coherence
Exam
These Final Hours
Let The Corpses Tan
Titane

Will report back if I watch them and they're freaky.

Yeah, but in a good way. You know, good triumphs over scientific phenomenon.

These other films put you in a much darker place

Inside the Black Rainbow. Same guy directed Mandy, so you know where this is going.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. Beyond freaky. Shame this movie has almost completely fallen off the radar.

I saw that on TV years ago. Superb film. The meat truck scene, in particular, has stayed with me ever since.
