If they can keep the discussion on the economy, Romney can win. He has a lot of the attributes needed to sell the job, plus he has financial expertise/experience falling out of his toe nails. Obviously his running mate will be hugely important.SeminiferousButtNoid wrote:I think it would be a monumental mistake politically for Romney to get the nod in 2012. It will be another Clinton/Dole showdown, with Obama winning. I think Obama will win in 2012 regardless of his lazy performance so far. The Republican party, although strong at the state level, has no national leaders that are worth a damn in a general election. If they get behind someone relatively young, with good experience, and not a straight party line Republican, they may have a shot.
It would definitely be contingent upon the economy staying shitty. His beliefs are a little out there, but then, a shitty economy helped the moderate vote swing toward Obama in spite his retarded religion and his well known shady friends. If the economy is shitty enough, the average person doesn't really care if you believe in Helm's Deep so long as you seem like you have ideas on how to get the job done.
Regarding the Clinton/Dole reference, it's sort of what Obama/McCain was, in a way; the shot was McCain's "gold watch". The Republicans didn't really want to win. They robbed the people/treasury for long enough and shit was about to get really hot, so they passed the hot potato to the Democrats.
The real question is whether the Republicans will actually start to be conservative and let a candidate be him/herself.
