MICHAEL SCHENKER Made Ozzy Turn Him Down as Randy Rhoads' Replacement

Post by Zabooka »

Is there anyone more full of themselves than Michael Schenker?

This guy has the most bizarre people skills. He couldn't just say no, he has to come up with a pretentious plan to make Ozzy turn him down.

In an interview with Classic Rock, Schenker explained he'd been creating material with the Michael Schenker Group, early in its run. During this time, he received a phone call from the Prince of Darkness: "I got a phone call from Ozzy Osbourne in the middle of the night, stuttering, asking me to help him out because Randy Rhoads had died in that plane crash.

"I loved Sabbath, and I should have been delighted to join. I instantly had visions of Ozzy dragging me across the stage by my hair, but a voice in my head said, 'Michael, follow your vision.'"

The guitarist continued, noting he desired to get away from the spotlight at the time: "I'd left UFO and Scorpions because I didn't want to go any further with the fame thing, and I wanted freedom and peace, so I felt it would be crazy to join. Ozzy knew that I was Randy's favorite guitar player, so he thought I'd be the perfect fit, but it wasn't the right time. We were already rehearsing the Assault Attack album with Graham Bonnett."

Schenker concluded by revealing the ingenious plan he'd concocted to force Ozzy to turn him down: "The only way I could think of getting out of the Ozzy gig was by making outrageous demands, so that's what I did. In his book ["I Am Ozzy"] Ozzy said I asked for a private jet, and that's true, but it was only so that he'd turn me down."

I read this interview also. I commend Schenker for doing it. It is very important to have a clear mind and to be happy. You have to do what is correct for yourself.

Agreed. He definitely did the right thing.

Can you imagine having to deal with Sharon for God knows how long?

Well, usually it wasn't that long before you got fired by her...

It seems like maybe Ozzy just wanted UFO for his backing band what with his dabblings with Schenker and Way...

What he's saying is pretty normal: "I liked my job, I didn't really want to make a change, so I asked for something crazy. That was the only way I'd actually be motivated to go through with it."

Thank God he stayed with what he was doing. Assault Attack is better than any post-Randy Ozzy album. Maybe not be leaps and bounds, but it is.

Not better than Bark at the Moon, The Ultimate Sin, No More Tears, No Rest for the Wicked, Ozzmosis, or Down to Earth.

Oh Hi DF. I can see you've never listened closely to Assault Attack. Actually even just half of that record is better than all those Ozzy records. Heck even this song alone is...https://youtu.be/imGyOlMUHos?si=ObKWVCPSP70TX8Vz=
