Arise.
Powerful, well written thrash.
Beneath the Remains is also great.
Chaos A.D. has good songs, but they were going in a new direction, simpler de-tuned songs. The followup Roots was a huge commercial success, but thrashers like me only liked a handful of songs.

I love Roots and Chaos AD. If you are listening for the first time….hold off on Roots.

Arise, but Beneath the Remains and Chaos AD are close. Schizophrenia and Morbid Visions go hard as shit too. I even like the often hated Roots.
Now everything after Roots is basically garbage though.

If you're a thrash fan, the stuff before Chaos AD.
Not everybody is on MetalShit.com and Blabberface fuckin’ dot net! Who cares? There’s such a small amount of people that do that. - Blotz
Re: What’s Sepultura’s best album ?
There are several great ones. Arise, however, is at the top for me.

I've always been partial to Schizophrenia. Arise is pretty good, but I've never desired to listen to it consistently. Could say the same about Beneath. Chaos AD and Roots were too mainstream 90s to me. Against is not bad. It has about the same type of appeal as Battlezone/Feel My Pain. Their newer stuff is ok. I'll listen to it once in a while but never feel like going back to it. Schizo has at least 3 songs I'll go back to. The instrumental on there was always my favorite though.

Re: What’s Sepultura’s best album ?
Arise is the best one. Then you'll want Beneath the Remains and Chaos A.D.
Roots is the most accessible one.
Their earlier stuff, Schizophrenia and Morbid Visions are harder, less produced. Cavalera released re-recorded and updated versions of those last year.
The albums after Max left aren't bad at all. Still had solid musicianship right til the end, just no songwriting talent.

This is what got me into Sepultura!

Many years ago I was at Tower Records in Dublin,CA and this tape was being played over the PA and on video monitors. I asked one of the guys working there who it was and that was that. Bought the Arise CD on the spot!!

Re: What’s Sepultura’s best album ?
I'll always put Remains ahead of Arise - the best pure thrash album ever that's not called Reign In Blood. Arise is more sophisticated but loses some of Remains' primal energy. Then Chaos, then Schizophrenia, then the rest.

The run from Schizophrenia to Chaos AD is classic. Their last few albums were also pretty good. The last one, Quada or whatever, is worth checking out.

Re: What’s Sepultura’s best album ?
Schizo, Beneath, and Arise are essential.
Chaos is where they started to lose the plot.
Roots is dogshit, but it's also the best nu-metal album of all time.

Re: What’s Sepultura’s best album ?
It's a toss up between Beneath the Remains, Arise an Chaos.
Chaos was a big disapointment for me at the time, sort of like Kreator's Renewal. I guess I was expecting another killer thrash album.
However, it grew on me, and is now probably the one I listen to the most.
Schizophrenia has some great riffs but the songs aren't there yet, imo. Bit of a diamond in the rough. Still, they were like what, 16 years old at the time? 17?
I agree. On the other hand, that ''primal energy'' is turned up to eleven when they play(ed) Arise song live. Like the song ''Arise '', among others. Check out Live in Barcelona 1991, for example.

"Beneath the remains" if you're into death metal.
"Arise" for a thrashier sound.
"Roots" for that late 90's "nu metal/groovy stuff".
All of them, excellent.
"Schizophrenia" is pretty good too.
"Chaos A.D." never did nothing from me, apart from the 2 well known tracks.
"Bestial Devastation/Morbid Visions" are more like demos... ok, but not essential.
Derrick Greene years are a no-no for me.

Re: What’s Sepultura’s best album ?
I hadn't listened to that for years though I have some bootlegs from the Arise / Chaos years and saw them a fair few times in real life too. I played it on the commute this morning and that live version of Arise is stunning. Also I didn't spot it before but bits of the drumming in Dead Embryonic Cells seem to be the embryo (ha!) for the tribal drumming sound that they were moving into.mullet_head wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2024 5:26 pmI agree. Yeh... Even though I wasn't a fan at first, I can't really fault Max and Igor for introducing elements of Brazilian culture in their music. You go a few rounds in a ''roda de capoeira'' smoking joints while playing the Berimbau and the congas and that shit starts to grow on you.GoodJudge wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2024 5:03 amI hadn't listened to that for years though I have some bootlegs from the Arise / Chaos years and saw them a fair few times in real life too.
