The Battle Royale : KISS vs Bon Jovi

Ah, where do I even begin? Let me take you on a journey through my own personal rock 'n' roll odyssey as an Italian KISS fan.

Picture this: it's the '80s, and I'm just a wide-eyed teenager wandering the streets of Italy, soaking in every riff and drumbeat that echoes from the record shops lining the cobblestone streets.

You see, being a KISS fan in Italy wasn't just about the music; it was a way of life. I remember spending countless hours flipping through vinyl records, searching for that elusive gem to add to my collection. And when I stumbled upon a KISS album, it was like striking gold. The artwork alone was enough to send shivers down my spine, but it was the music that truly captivated me.

But amidst my quest for all things KISS, there was another band that seemed to be everywhere: Bon Jovi. Their catchy hooks and anthemic choruses filled the airwaves, competing for attention alongside my beloved KISS. And while I couldn't deny the infectious energy of Bon Jovi's music, there was always something missing for me.

You see, KISS wasn't just a band to me; they were a symbol of rebellion, a beacon of freedom in a world that often felt suffocating. I'll never forget the first time I saw a KISS music video on TV. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. The pyrotechnics, the elaborate costumes, the sheer spectacle of it all—it was mesmerizing.

And then there were the concerts. Oh, the concerts. I was lucky enough to see both KISS and Bon Jovi live, and while both shows were unforgettable in their own right, there was something undeniably special about a KISS concert. The energy, the excitement, the sense of camaraderie among fellow fans—it was electric.

But as the '80s rolled on, I couldn't shake the feeling that Bon Jovi was becoming more about image than substance. Sure, they had the looks and the charm, but where was the raw intensity of rock 'n' roll? It seemed like they were more interested in selling records than making music that spoke to the soul.

Meanwhile, KISS remained unapologetically themselves. They didn't care about trends or critics; they just did what they loved and let the music speak for itself. And that's why, to me, KISS will always be the more legitimate band of the '80s. They weren't just rock stars; they were legends, and nothing—not even time—can ever change that.

Let's pit some of the iconic songs of KISS against Bon Jovi and see who comes out on top:

"Rock and Roll All Nite" (KISS) vs. "Livin' on a Prayer" (Bon Jovi): While "Livin' on a Prayer" may be a karaoke favorite, "Rock and Roll All Nite" is the ultimate anthem of rebellion and partying. With its infectious chorus and electrifying energy, KISS easily takes this round.

"Detroit Rock City" (KISS) vs. "You Give Love a Bad Name" (Bon Jovi): "Detroit Rock City" is a tour de force of rock 'n' roll, with its blistering guitar riffs and adrenaline-fueled lyrics. While "You Give Love a Bad Name" may have its catchy moments, it pales in comparison to the raw power of KISS.

"I Was Made for Lovin' You" (KISS) vs. "Wanted Dead or Alive" (Bon Jovi): This one might seem like a tough call, but let's be real here— "I Was Made for Lovin' You" is a disco-infused masterpiece that transcends genres. Meanwhile, "Wanted Dead or Alive" is a solid track, but it just can't compete with the sheer infectiousness of KISS.

And there you have it, folks. KISS reigns supreme once again, proving that when it comes to rock 'n' roll, there's simply no contest.

Bon Jovi got me into Hard Rock in the late 80s. Kiss did not.

The fact that all the links to his previous essays are now longer than the current essay is next level.

Same!
I've been saying it since the start. And I still think a lot of it reads like ChatGPT. A bit too textbook, even allowing for alleged 'English as a 2nd language'. E
