I don't think I would be in the mindset of drawing colorful dots on the paper if I was sick & supposedly in the hospital and have been crying all day.

That was my first thought - she had time to use different markers and decorate that picture, but she didn't have time to put on makeup?

Maybe she figured if she did a really good job on the sign it would distract everyone from noticing she's 14 and not the same girl in the other photos??

Or maybe she figured after using the sign for the photo, she could bring it in to show and tell the next day.

A little conspiracy theory ... in this phone interview, if you listen to the part with Lisa from the beginning when Donnie says "Lisa, are you there?" - this whole thing sounds like a conference call, they are even talking at the same time once or twice for a moment and can both be heard clearly (it's just that the audio of the whole interview sucks). This would solve the problem of her never actually meeting him in person and not really being there with him and it's still the same voice/same person that spoke to all those people on the phone regularly. Just an idea.

Or there's more than one phone in the house.
