I had never actually played one before but now I'm seriously considering ordering one in Jetglo black rather than the Fireglo in the pic.Anyone have experience with the newer Ricks? Are they consistent in quality?I've always wanted one and I'm sure we could add a few songs to our set where I could show her off.Prolly some Beatles or Petty..hehe
I want one of those too someday. But I just want a 6-string one. I almost bought one from a pawn shop years ago but I let it get away while I was trying to get the money together. Super unique tone. You can't get it from any other guitar. I played a new one about a year ago. It was a little less resonant but still nice.
I dropped into the same store for some strings over the weekend and lo and behold, they had a Jetglo black 12-string hanging next to the Fireglo one.Gave it a go and liked it a little more than the one I played last week (slimmer neck) but for now it's on the "maybe in a little while" list.I can't really justify throwing a couple grand for a guitar I won't really play much in my current band,no matter how much I like it.

At the same time,I ordered up a set of Seymour Duncan Phat Cat pickups for an old '87 Les Paul Studio that I'm currently hot rodding. It's been out of action for quite awhile now but I got the bug to finally get 'er done the other day.She was originally white but instead of gradually turning to a nice yellowish color like most old Gibsons do,it kinda just turned to a shitty brown color in spots..lol.It looked like crap so I stripped it down to bare wood intending to do a clear finish but I changed my mind and instead sprayed a medium metallic blue basecoat followed by 4 coats of clear gloss.I'm switching to nickel hardware from the original gold cause it goes better with the blue.Actually once it's done the only original parts left will be the neck and body.I'll get some pics up as it goes along

I think you're talking about Gracie Stands, that have the acoustic in standing, playing position so the guy with an electric already on can walk up and play the acoustic parts and then go right back to electric.

Yes was the firs band I kew of to use them, then Rush. Then everybody used them, until the first acoustic simulators came along. A lot of people dumped them for the simulators, because the "acoustic" sounding chord could resonate right til the electric power chord kicked in. Nice effect. Rush 1997's version of "Driven" made me go buy an acoustic simulator. But a real acoustic just sounds better, so a lot of people went back to them. That's why you're seeing them again a lot more.

Anybody here familiar with the "Seth Lover" Seymour Duncan pick-ups? I know there are several models that bear that trademark; just wondering if anybody here has experience with them and knows which particular ones give a good versatile, sharp tone. Or even any other humbucker-type pickups that emulate that early PAF tone well.

Thanks in advance.

Those and the Antiquities nail the PAF tone. I like the Gibson Burstbuckers too. My favorite though is the '59 from Duncan.

The guitars I've played that had burstbuckers, mostly low-end Les Pauls, I absolutely hated the sound of those pickups. Compared to the '59 PAF reissue pickups, it was like night and day; the burstbuckers had a thin, tinny sound that I want to avoid at all cost.

I looked up the Antiquity and that looks interesting. Thanks.

Back in the day the original issue DiMarzio PAFs did a pretty good job of that IMO. My old SG and my '77 Les Paul both had those and they were way better than the stock Gibson pickups - and the SG was a '67 Standard with Patent pickups that were not bad.

Today it's hard to say. I like more distortion, the Duncan Distortion and the Custom Custom are sweet pickups for me, but again, I like high-gain. Sorry for the non-answer, but a distortion pickup and a 5-12AX7 preamp with 6L6 power tubes are my starting point for bliss.

Bare Knuckles makes a great PAF and hi-gain pick up. BK may be the best at PAF, just ahead of Lindy Fralin as far as production pickups go.

Picked up one of these today at Guitar Center:

Image

Actually I picked up two... got the first one home and it was DOA, the second one worked fine. It's the 30W version, I wanted something for the bedroom that had a better tone than my Line 6 Micro Spider. I also have a L6 Vetta, their expensive flagship amp, and goddamn if the Vypyr doesn't kick its ass. There are some very convincing amp models in this thing. Plus it's got a ton of effects, and unlike most modelers, there are usable presets right out of the box. They sounded so good, I actually enjoyed trying it out at the store.

I know a lot of people are negative about modeling, but I've always been fascinated by the technology. Next time you're in a store with one, check it out and see what you think of the tones. I'm really happy with it, gonna be great for putting together demos.

As I was waiting to pay, I picked up a Squier Strat to noodle on for a minute. Holy shit, it was actually a nice guitar! Fuckers are only $99. I'm sure the hardware and electronics are crappy, but the feel of the neck was very fast, and acoustically it sounded good. Would make a great backup for next to nothing. I sure wish cheapo guitars were like this when I started playing. My first Kramer Striker was a plywood piece of dogshit.

I understand what you are saying. I tried one of those Fender "Time Machine" Strats against a Squier Strat. The Squier was better. I've also played some Epiphones that were much better than Gibsons.

Tru dat.

When I started, my dream was to own a Les Paul or a black strat...so on my 16th birthday, I went and got...a Fender Mustang :(

...not a bad guitar, but at $225, all I could afford, and the closest I could get. I also went $125 for a Peavey Bandit.

Aside from that, all you could get for the money were Sonex's and Hondos, both of which kinda sucked.

I tell ya. Kids these days...they just don't know how easy they have it :D

Went gear hunting and scored a new but slightly abused PRS SE One and a killer closeout deal on a Peavey XXX head.

Got the guitar for $299 with an awesome PRS gig bag and got the head for $799, whoohoo.

As for Seth Lover pickups I find them fairly anemic, vintage outputs and A2 mags just don't so much for me. I'd save some cash and get the Alnico 2 Pro's if going that route. The A5 mag SD Ant's are great as are 59's though they can be a bit boomy in the neck, grab an SD Jazz for the neck works well.

That's a great price on the SE. They're really well-built guitars. I used one yesterday while demoing the Vypyr, and it felt like I was playing my US made Custom 22. Slap some better pickups in there and she'll rock.

Yeah, I haver a late 90s Squier Affinity that smoked my Mexican Fendar Standard Stratocaster. 22 frets as opposed to 21, better acoustic resonance, nicer feeling neck and the cheqp pickups were hotter! Sold the Fender and kept the Squier, it is my formal white traditional Strat. I normally prefer Superstrats anyway and I have some 80s Yamaha RGXs that are great for that. But the Squier is great for the traditional Strat role and I'd have to spring over a grand for once of the nicer USA Strats to get more performance. I'm happy with my Squier for that role. Might change the bridge pickup for a tappable single-space humbucker, that's about all I'd change.

No clips. I'm going to try different preamp tubes in it today and maybe try
EL34's. This amp is a jewel. I only wish I had the 2x10 version. If you guys
ever come across one check it out.

I'd love a PRS SE One right now. Some guy is selling one of those Marshall combos on Phoenix's Craigslist for $325.

I bought an Xaviere today and am selling my Warmoth LP Special and Epi Dot.

Look at this sick finish:
