Do you like Sammy solo?

There was always something very generic about his music ... but he was the best of the generic rockers!

I love a lot of his solo stuff, but not all of it, I mostly prefer his pre Van halen stuff to his post van halen output

I like his early solo output. It got a bit too cringey for me around VOA, but Standing Hampton is a classic of that hard-rock-but-not-quite-metal era.

First show I ever saw was Sammy on SH with Aldo Nova opening. It was great.

This again? I'll repeat. 1978's Live All Night Long is as good a collection of live rock and roll songs as any. Make It Last, Red, Bad Motor Scooter, Reckless. Terrific stuff. And yes, Standing Hampton...

Yep, sure do. He has plenty of great solo tunes beginning with "Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)" and going forward from there.

Love Sammy! Don’t love all his stuff but his good stuff is great! And as others have said Standing Hampton is a top to bottom classic.

Even his "Greatest Hits" album has filler, good singer, but weak catalog.

Yep. He's about half a "greatest hits artist" at best.

Basically never liked anything Sammy did.
I understand he can sing and all that, but I never liked the sound of his voice, his lyrics nor his music.

He probably got further on less talent than anyone in rock'n'roll. The 5 albums before Standing Hampton didn't go copper, Geffen probably dropped an 8-ball off with the SH promos. It's fitting that he's BFFs with Sauce because they're both more lucky than good.

I LOVE Montrose. Sammy solo, not as much, very commercial. But hey, ya gotta pay the bills, right?

Interesting fact: 'Leaving The Warmth of the Womb' from 'Marching to Mars' is the original Montrose line up (Sammy Hagar, Bill Church, Denny Carmassi, Ronnie Montrose)

Other than a few singles before he joined VH, I didn't know much about him. I never went back and checked out his catalog to this day. I liked him in VH. I liked Marching to Mars. Lost interest after that.

The album after MtM was meh. And anything I may have heard afterward was forgettable.

First Montrose album is a masterpiece. Second one was a bit of a drop in quality, but still solid. Too bad they never did another one.

There is something wholesome and comforting about solo hagar. Like a nice American diner.

Ehh, that's debatable. Essential Red has 20 songs, and "Trans Am" and "3-Lock Box" aren't even on it.

No.

It took me years before I could even stomach Van Hagar.

I gave Chickenbutt a whirl, some time around what we can call the That Metal Show era, where it seemed like everyone was starting supergroups and they all sounded virtually identical.

74% of them had Glenn Hughes in the band.

His solo stuff is great. All anyone seems to talk about on here are Standing Hampton or 3 Lock Box. Those are good but he had 5 solo albums before that which are all better. Tons of great songs. Urban Guerilla, This Planet’s on Fire, Silver Lights, Turn Up The Music, Trans Am, Plain Jane, Love or Money.

I thought the quality of his lyrics and melodies took a nosedive in VH compared to his solo/Montrose stuff, I suspect because he thought he had to compete with Roth’s legacy and be more “raunchy”, at least on the uptempo songs. “Heavy Metal” and “One Way to Rock” capture the spirit of an 80s concert, “Swept Away” is a great love song, as is “Baby It’s You”. “Make It Last” has a great message. But even the better VH songs (BOBW, Summer Nights, 5150) have lazy lyrics (“Only time will tell if we stand the test of time”). Meh. “Black and Blue” had a great riff but the lyrics are garbage. I wonder too if having not written the music/riffs in VH, he was less inspired lyrically.

I like the fact that he's still going out a playing / making music at his age. He has enough FU money to say whatever he wants to.

I don’t know how many solo albums and Waboritas and Circle and Chickenfoot and Chickencircle and Circlefoot or whatever the fuck other albums he has released after leaving VH, but there’s not ONE song there that time has told has stood the test of time. Not ONE.

I remember when Ten 13 came out, everyone said it was such a great album, return to form, showing VH how it was done etc … a year later no one even remembers that album exists.

That sums up his solo career with the exception of about five songs. I mean, people are hardly holding up signs wanting him to play The Iceman at Circlefoot shows are they. No one remembers any of that shit.
