Horrible news! My band made record at his home studio in Chicago in 1995. Besides his works with Page/Plant, Pixies, Nirvana and hundreds of indie rock bands, he was ethical, funny, kind and incredibly smart. Just his masterful ability to record drums like no one else makes him legend.

I played poker with Steve quite a bit, and this is absolutely true. His public persona could give off a vibe of one of those "eclectic weirdos who's probably an asshole in person" but it couldn't be further from the truth IME.

Always had tons of respect for him. RIP.

He made a lot of great, groundbreaking music, in his own bands, and in his production work with other artists.

Rock n’ Roll in our time wouldn’t have been the same or nearly as good without him, for my ears.

Not a fan of his style, but always heard about him because I lived in Chicago during the '90s.

He supposedly turned down points on the Nirvana album. Felt it was unethical to "take" money from a band in that manner. You gotta respect that.

Met him once when I was 14. I was like some Beavis dirtball, asking him "So what's, like, shellac?" I was probably wearing a Pavement shirt 8 sizes too big.

And he was the nicest guy in the world. I read all about how he was this massive prick so I was a little hesitant but he could not have been cooler.

Nicest musicians I've ever met: Steve Albini and Mike Watt.

IMO Albini had the most undeserved reputation as a "massive prick" ever.

He was just one of those dudes who did things his way, but coming from the place of an idealistic notion of what's right. So he didn't waver, and had no problems voicing it. He wasn't one of those "miserable asshole for the sake of it" types.

Those kinds of people push buttons/rub others the wrong way, but are typically incredibly good hearted and genuine at their core, because it's all coming from a place of wanting the world to be a better place.

He played in a private poker game that I sometimes play in. I didn't play with him, but the word is that he was a truly nice guy and (obviously) a great poker player.
I respected his stance on not taking points from bands and he did some amazing work with the Pixies and others.

I only played with Steve when he first started taking the game seriously, and he was decent at the time. He specialized in the stud variants, which I also played a lot of.

I remember making a play in a hand he wasn't involved in in Stud/8 that was honestly pretty advanced and a little outside of the box. He asked me about it later on, and had already reconstructed the entire thing in his head and clearly had thought about it deeply by the time he was able to talk to me about it.

Needless to say after that I wasn't the least bit surprised to watch him progress very quickly and eventually win a couple of WSOP bracelets.

And also, given how miserable stud players usually are, the fact that anyone who played poker with him said he was a fun guy says a ALOT, hahahaha.

He produced a lot of records that nobody listened to, drove Blowbrains to suicide, and spent most of the last 20 years crying about how the old studio system was dead. Sounds like he was a closet racist as well. Seems like a swell fella.

I was kinda waiting for the bubblegummers to chime in with "He produced a lot of records nobody listened to" so we can see who the real MTV posers are in the group.

Hit records! #1 singles! These are the things that matter. That's why Jimmy Buffett is better than Black Sabbath.

I don't even know how to respond to "crying about how the old studio system was dead." Like... that is Tym-level ignorance.

His stuff with High on Fire, Failure and Helmet was even better than The Pixies and PJ Harvey. Great catalog, RIP fucking legend.

U expect us to believe some schmuck in the middle of Iowa met a producer who is from somewhere else and doesn't go out on tour?

What's up, Babymouth. He's from Chicago; he toured in a band called Shellac.

Also, here's the thing about living in "the middle of Iowa"--you can travel. Like, you don't have to live your life being a retarded racist babymouther that babymouths online all day, you can go places and meet people. It's wild.

Guy who was a touring musician for 40 years didn't tour. Pretty dumb, Babymouth!

Okay, I googled him and he was in a band called “Run Nigger Run.”

Satire: Apparently not a thing.

You couldn't make Blazing Saddles today, am I right?

But it's nice to see Suckit taking a stand against racism in just this one specific instance.

Nash Kato from Urge Overkill was in that band, maybe Church Lady can CANCEL them too.

I think one of the craziest things I've seen that is semi-specific to Sludge is it's always 1986. If someone did something 40 years ago, it's as if they did it yesterday. Forget that Albini came out several years ago and said all that shit was idiotic and he's embarrassed of it, we got tickets to AUTOGRAPH!!!!

I’m seeing he was also a pedophile who admitting to liking child porn, produced an album by a guy after he went out of prison for child porn charges (called him a good friend on Reddit ama) and also had other pedos frequent his forum before they went to prison as well.

Is liking child porn a form of satire? News to me.
