Favourite Zep clone?

Post by SchenkerFan »

Been digging Kingdom Come lately. First album is a classic but plenty of good stuff after that as well. Bad Image is a really good album as well.

Honorable mention goes to Zebra.

Don't like Zepplin or Kingdom Come or Great White. But I do like me some Greta Van Fleet.

Winner. WS'87 started the whole Led Clones craze.

Fastway was compared to them, I think because of Dave King's pipes.

I always thought that Fastway and All Fired Up were solid. I never really got the Zep comparison myself. I'm not much of a Zeppelin fan. I dig GVF tho'.

Not sure I'd consider Badlands a Zeppelin clone.

The band that's currently doing it the best is GVF. And they're leaning into it. Not trying to distance themselves from it like most bands that draw the Zep comp early in their careers...

Love the first Kingdom Come album. Great White’ss One Bitten as well.

Ironically, I don’t like Zeppelin much.

Aren't the girls notorious for playing a couple of Zep tunes in their live set?

Like always? They've done it for years. I always thought it was kind of weird since they aren't really Zep clones

The correct answer is, as mentioned above, Whitesnake for WS87. Kingdom Come would be a close second, though. Honorable mention to Blue Murder's debut as well.

Their biggest song before Alone, Barracuda, couldn't be more Zeppelin if it tried.

I hate to admit it, but for years I thought Jimmy Page was the singer in Led Zeppelin because I heard Coverdale/Page and assumed that the singer must be the guy from Led Zeppelin.

The Great White Zeppelin covers are fantastic.

One song (or 10) does not make a band that's been around 5 decades a Zep clone. Harder to find a band that doesn't have a song or songs that channel Zeppelin.

Yeah I know, it's a cover. So Barracuda probably sounds like Joni Mitchell.

I guess I'm in the minority in thinking that the GVF "Zeppelin Clone" thing is way, way overblown.

It's almost entirely down to the first thing everyone heard from them being the "ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh mamaaaa" line at the start of Highway Tune.

That line (on the recording) sounds identical to Plant, and literally everyone and their dog was like "ohhhh they're trying to be Led Zeppelin!!!".

Beyond literally that line, they mostly just sound like any other throwback-ish rock band to me.

His voice has already deteriorated/changed enough that he's lost a significant amount of what made him sound like Plant to begin with, as well.

DIrty Honey has some Zep vibes, and they are much much much better than GVF.

it dawned on me (as I was listening to them today) that I don't think this band has been mentioned

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION

not from a Plant/Hughes perspective but the sound of the band. Especially with Bonzo Jr on the skins
