Incorrect. Rough Cutt’s debut was released in 1985. NOT 1984.

PURPLE RAIN came out in 1984, and that whole experience surely hasn't been bettered since.

I remember I was like WTF when I 1st heard Jump, then I heard the rest of the album and was like whoa. They were on top of the world. Who knew that it was going to be the end of an era.

I guess it depends on where you were. In Mid-Michigan 1984 was some dogshit. Our government had sided with management over labor leaving the workers with little to no protection, and the plants were closing while goods were being imported from overseas and job were being sent abroad.
By the time I graduated in '84 we had 15-20% unemployment. You saw 40 year old guys who had been in union jobs at Oldsmobile their entire lives working at McDonalds to just get ANY income happening. Shit was saaaad.
I was always going to move to Cali, but that made it an easy choice.
Best time was post-Viet Nam and Watergate Seventies, from the Bicentennial until the neocons took over in '80. Disco and Quaaludes. Outlaw country and Star Wars. $10 Led Zeppelin shows. AFTERNOON DELIGHT AND ABBA.
The only downside was that Kiss was huge.

Re: 1984 is the greatest…
Always seemed like it had to be the most fun year of the 1980s. I was born a couple years before, but man it would have been a blast. I was always envious of people who "lived through the 80s", even if most of are dead (or deadbeats) now.
Look at the movies released that year... Ghostbusters, Terminator, Police Academy, Karate Kid, Footloose, Revenge of the Nerds, This Is Spinal Tap, etc.
Cosby Show, Miami Vice, Night Court, Who's The Boss, Jeopardy.
Van Halen, Thriller, Boys of Summer, Purple Rain, Born in the U.S.A., Like A Virgin.
It's crazy that only five albums topped the charts in 1984 (four if you didn't count Huey Lewis and the News at #1 for just a week).
Rick Allen still had two arms, and Vince Neil wasn't a killer yet. What a year!

Re: 1984 is the greatest…
I'd say about halfway through '82 up until the end of '92 was the golden era of music for me. 1984 had OOTC, Stay Hungry, Love at First Sting, Tooth and Nail, etc., as well as plenty of good pop/new wave music, so I'd say it's at least one of the greatest years of the 80's.

Add to that the Cold War in full swing and the post- Harrisburg/ Chornobyl nuclear panic. Not that great a decade but at least the economy was better than in the 70s.Bono Nettencourt wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2024 2:37 pm The 80s weren't all that great. That said, those were the best decades for movies and music. 1984 was a great year for that.
